View Full Version : Another way to ID your crabpots

Had an idea to ID my crabpots to deter people stealing them and to use as their own.
Used a dremel and engraving head to etch name and town on the plastic PVC support for the frames of the pots.
Unsure if anyone has come up with this idea before as I have not seen or heard of it being done.

Yup, i do that. Also use the crab'n'gear technique of using a piece of plastic with engraved details stiched into pot, with mesh removed behind it. That way if the remove the name tag there is a big hole in the pot!

Thats a great idea. I had a appliance repair shop on the southside and was broken into so many times I engraved all my drills etc withe the words..... Stolen from Aable Appliances...... Never lost a drill after that :).

I've done a similar thing, but using a white correcting pen (designed to apply "white-out" to paper). You can get these pens for a few $ at newsagents or stationery shops.

Good idea i use silver tape folded back upon it's self around something to create a double-sided tag, then mark that, last near forever if not ripped off...your idea is so much better.

Engrave your lic or rego number and purchase date in as that way whe the police or fisheries find a bloke with 50 pots in his garage you have a chance at a conviction and return - not likely but. I used to use just 3 or 4 hacksaw nicks so I could recognise mine at a distance , or slip another coloured condiut glued over one leg,- only recovered one and trust me it was worth it!!!!!!! Such satisfaction and offender not likely to reoffend.

I just use those test and tag stickers on my pots. Nice and effective .

thats fine for the pot but don't forget you are required by to have name and address on the float too.
i suppose we could engrave the float so its not as reusable to the one that stole it? although i also noticed in this regs that you only need your surname not address http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/documents/Fisheries_RecreationalFishing/Rec-fishing-regs.pdf

I don't like putting my address on bait traps either because it tells anyone who pulls it up that you are not home, especially if on holidays and therefore a little distance from home which means they know you won't be back there in a hurry, as someone could break into your house.
I always put my name and phone number on tags.

One good way but takes time is to punch your name ie SC every 200mm or so around the entire ring, dont grind the ring at all just punch it .
Just make sure you stamp both rings from the inside and under a knot , just push the knot a little to the side and stamp it .
Keep your mark small and unique if possible.
Remove the hose joining the ring and then try and stamp the ends as well .
Also stamp your name at an odd interval ie 200mm then 150mm then continue around a 200mm , remember to record how you do this , this is what will set your pots appart from everyone else's pots.
The average dumb arse crab pot theif wont even look at the rings and even if he did spot the marks what he going to do about it ?? bugger all because they are twits.
Then lets say we are dealing with a hard core pot theif what's he going to do about it ?? he would have to remove the rings because you can't grind the ID of with the mesh on . Then he can grind of the ID but this is no good becauce it stuff the Gal big time.
Lets say he does this and then puts the pot back together , one day in the water and it will rust the ring at every ID point that has been ground of which is a dead give away not to mention look quite odd, after all why the heck would anyone grind the rings ?
Lets say he steals a pot , pulls it apart , grinds the ID of then sends the rings of to be re gal , nah he wont do that that because they are cheap bastards and it would be easier and cheaper to go buy a new pot instead going through all the trouble .
So what would be the next best thing a crab pot theif could do ?? that easy look for pots without ID marks stamped into the rings because them stamped pots are just to dang hard to hide .
Go about the normal business of how a pot is required to be marked coupled with the fact your pot is truly unique on a part of the pot that is the hardest to change.
You can never stop crab pot theifs but you can sure as hell make it very hard for em.
Cheers

i don't like putting address on either but i read you had to or get fined. but after reading that PDF it looks like you don't have to now. However phone numbers can be revers trace to your address too. so the smart ones will get your address anyway via your phone number.

If you look at those regs page 32 ..between the two dark boxes it says name and address on the pot or dilly. It says later on the same page surname must be on the float. So surname twice on the gear. Address once.

i wish they would state clearly in one spot what he reg is instead of a bit here and a bit there. gets confusing. so yes i thought you had to put your address on the float. if not they can fine you.

G'day Razgo....
As I read it the address goes on the pot/dilly with your name. Only your name must go on the float. Of course, that is the legal requirement you can put anything else you like where you like. Even your best recipe for the share farmers if you like.

PS: To my last post.
Is it just my own opinion or is crab pot theft a much bigger problem than it was years ago.
It has gotten that way that I just accept that my pots are going to go missing every once in a while.

Hate the idea of having my address on pots. Why not the boat rego number or something ?!
I know of a couple of incidences where people have caught out pot theives/ communal crabbers..
It is interesting what a shot gun shell through the bottom of a tinnie will do.. even more interesting when its in NQ and the locals might be hungry :P

hate to admit it guys but as much as engraving your details on it is a good idea and i like it. its only going to keep the honest ones away. the pro's (not saying all of them) just put there own float on it and sink it in a different location and bang thats there new pot. it stays in the water only to come up to be checked and rebated. some people say you lose them with the current and yeah im sure u do but around russell island i lose on average 1 everytime i go up to my grandparents house and the ones i have lost are irreplacable as the man who made them died.. its quite low in my eyes to steal a mans pot. get ur own 2 for $40 at bcf ya bastards!

Even worse when you use them a bit and want some quality. I find the more expensive/ heavier pots tend to "get washed away with the tides" more than the cheap ones.
