After breaking the bail arm on my Shimano Symetre 1500 I needed a new breaming reel for last weekend. Went to church (Tackle Warehouse) and discussed my options with Pete on Thursday night.

As I don't do too much breaming I wanted a relatively low cost reel and settled on the Daiwa CY 2000 after looking at other Shimanos and the Daiwa Exceller.

Spooled with 4lb crystal fireline (and 6lb nitlon leader) I hit the bay with my new reel on a windy Saturday morning at Peel. I was not expecting too much from a low cost reel but I was very pleasantly surprised. Casting small hardbodies with the wind was a breeze. Across the wind was easy as well and, bugger me, into the wind was OK too. Fished all morning for not a single air knot!

Drag was tested on a 44cm tailor and was smooth as silk...then again on 38cm and 40cm models. Oh - I got two bream as well at 23 and 26cm. Very happy with this reel.

Matched it to a 6' Daiwa Procaster 2 - 4kg rod - great budget breaming combo...

The CY aren't too bad eh Pete, especially when you can get them for under a $100. I've always favoured Shimano over Daiwa in the budget offerings, they always seemed to be a bit smoother. My own Symetre is over 6yrs old and while the handle is getting wobbly and the gears are starting to feel tired, the original drag is still sweet and it will keep on catching for some time yet. Can't imagine how you managed to break it! but these things do happen. You'll no doubt get many years from the little Daiwa too.

Cheers, Roo.

P.s. Day off today, barometer over 1020.....me thinks the local Bass will be getting a visit a little later.

Yep Rod, they are a great reel. Can't get them for under $100 though - that was the 2009 model.

This year's offering is slightly improved cosmetically and has a much better drag. Retails for around $140...

Clicked the bail arm back for a cast on the Symetre and it snapped clean through where it joins the reel. No misuse or abuse needed!

Go and smack some bass!
