Decided on a quick solo trip (solo because Bermo82 got a better offer) from Pinkenba to the inside of Moreton chasing squid yesterday, forcast was 6-10kn w to wsw. I hadn't been over in westerlies with this boat and prob won't again, wind was 10kn not long after the sun was up and a bit lumpy in the eastern bay, not bad going over but a bit of a slog at the start of the trip home (a little sore today). Not many boats over there as well, just a few larger cruisers, plenty of boats around Mud and the compass adj though.

1st stop was at the Tangalooma jetty to stock up on yellowtail for an upcoming tailor trip (about the only time I use bait these days). Didn't take long at a fish every cast, good size too, not very big. Pulled the pin after 20 min when a trev or a small kingy grabbed the soft plastic and took off through the pylons. Anyway enough yellow tail in the freezer now for a couple of trips later this winter chasing XOS size tailor.

I headed to the weed beds north of the wrecks and put out 3 jigs, it took a while to find them but when I did I landed 6 in quick succession, a few real good ones too. I driffed off them when I was de-inking the ones I'd caught and I couldn't find them again (note to self, why did I buy a GPS if I keep forgetting to use it). I got another couple then things went quiet and the wind was picking up so I headed home about 10am, like I said a bit of a slog and quite wet in my 4.35 tinny. I used the "GOTO" function on the Hum GPS and plotted a course coming up behind Mud hoping to avoid some of the chop. Didn't matter much as the bay started to glass out as I reached Mud. Since I was there I decided to troll a couple of minnows in close for tailor. After 5min, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, ended up with a 50cm squire which was a bit of a bonus. Great fun on 8lb braid in 3 foot of water. The squire took a little Gus Venus lure I got with a magazine about 10 years ago, can't believe I havn't lost it. It only gets a run every now and then these days but so far it's caught about 8 species, now I can add snapper to that list.

Got a phone call from my wife then to remind me about going to the movies in the arvo (she knows I loose track of time when I'm fishing) so I headed home with a couple of good feeds.

A little surprised I had to work so hard for the 8 squid as I got 26 in a couple of hours there only 4 weeks ago. Can anyone tell me if they taper off on the inside of Moreton over winter? I know that winter is the peak time for them in the eastern bay so maybe they move across, I'm not sure as I'm only new to this squiding caper.
Cheers
Mike

They have been smashing them down the rous, probably a bit closer than top end of bay if you just want squid.
