Looking at the 50H in this series was wondering what the better rod for bashing the bottom at 100mt plus would be. And also if anybody has one are there any pro's and con's, Thanks in advance.

There two types of reels in that model. If you are going to bottom bash, I would suggest you buy the 4.9 geared one as the 6.4 geared unit will struggle with a bit of weight on the line when you are retriving line with no fish especially when you are using lead of 3/4 oz or more. If you are floating, the 6.4 should be ok.

i have the 6.4 and would never use it for that depth.
i use a tyrnos 30 2 speed for fishing around the 100m depth and it seems to be great, not that i like fishing those depths often.
i personally think those depths should be fished with winch or electric but i am lazy!!!!!

I have the same reel in the High Speed version matched to a Shimano T-Curve 400 jig rod. This is fantastic and perfect for purpose, yes it is a little more work pulling a good fish from depth at that gearing but you can get them up faster which IMO is a god send........

Had the 50 (6.4) but downsized to the 40 (6.4). IMO I found it too big for hanging onto all day. The STT40H can still hold 300m of 50lb braid and more comfortable. Mine is matched to a live fibre jig stick. Can use it for trolling with or jigging, floatlining.

I am liking the lever drag model the sttld50h the single high speed in the black is nice and I think i will get Popey to make me a custom rod to accomadate the Diawa, Funny how some of the more noted Tackle stores are $50-$60 dearer for the same reel than if you ring BCF and ask them to order in for you, well ya get that and it pays to shop around.

If you are thinking the 40 take a look at the 2 30T models. they'll fit a similar line capacity but the taller spool means it's narrower and better balanced. We have a Saltiga 30T and it's absolutley brilliant.

I have 40H 4:9:1 matched to a shimano Tcurve 200 (24kg) rod it is a great outfit, Lightweight and quality, it has been used regularly in 60-110 meters of water.
Took it to swains a couple of weeks ago, had a few of the boys laugh when they saw the outfit as it looks like a 5kg rod. By the end of the week though they were all getting the model and brand from me.. ;)

How about a Daiwa Saltist HSH 7.3:1 in a 20 or 30 size.

I have a saltist lever drag in 40 size, single speed 6.4 version. Its great for 100m + work with a reasonably heavy 6 foot rod (calstar 600H). The saltist lever drag 40's and 50's are the same diameter, the 50's are just wider. I went with the 40 as the narrow spool means less twisting effect when winding up the big dongers (16 to 32 ounce). They have a massive long crank on them which is good when you have some weight on at the high gear ratio.
IMO, iIf you have the $429 then go for a 2 speed saltist 40 lever drag, then you have both the high and low ratio's to cope with extreme weight. Otherwise save yourself $60 and go for the single high speed saltist 40 lever drag.
I also have a saltist 40H in the old star drag model. Its also great as a bottom bashing machine but not as flexible for different uses as the lever drag models. The saltist star drags have 2 handle settings, with the crank lengthened out to the longest setting its bloody long and fine for pulling big weights at the high speed ratio. The 40H is a big enough real, the 50 would be combersome for this type of work IMO.
