Need a rod for a 4000 Stradic and I have lost touch with whats out there. What are the Raider range and Jewel range of rods from shimano like? What size matches up with the 4000 reel best? Mainly to be used for soft plastics for snapper.

I run mine on a Starlo stix Tournament Pro Maxspin. Its rated 4-7kg and is a great SP Snapper stick and doubles as a pretty effective spin stick.

hi
i have a 4000 stradic on a jewel barra spin rod and absolutly love it. although this rod may not be what you are looking for, there are other rods in this range and i think there is one designed for snapper. in my opinion, the jewel rods had a better feel than the raider series.

I have 1 on a Samuri plastics rod and the other on a Egrel S10. Both work really well but the Egrel is awesome on heavier fish and great for casting slickies and hard bods.

If you want the best for your money, buy a Raider II... I suggest 7ft or around that mark for flickin plastics... I use the T-Curves and Loomis's myself, but I do own afew Raiders and they are a great rod... I dont like the Jewels myself but thats just me. You wont get any better for the $100odd.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
i have a coupe of ian miller raider rods and they are nice to use, although i have found on my 2-4kg bream finesse which i use as my sp flick stick that the cork grip have split apart a bit although its probably becuase its the rod i use most often.
i dont have a huge budget but try to get the very best i can for my dollar so dont go past pflueger tournament high modulus graphite rods as these are just as good if you are looking for value for money. i have a 4000 stradic on a 4-7 pflueger and its good for snapper in the bay, big flatties and also jacks and has the ability to flick light lures on long way. when i was looking around for a 4-7kg snapper sp rod i looked at the raider snapper light and found it to be a little stiff for my own waters, but thats my personal opinion.
mate even the starlo ones horse recomends are great value and great rods.
point is - you dont need to spend hundred of dollars on top of the line rods like loomis, t-curves and the like to catch fish. sure they are awesome to have and drool over, i myself have expensive rods but it is not a requirement.

Starlo Tournament Maxispin again.....
Mine has a 3000 Sustain on it, and is used for jacks, but goes well on snapper too. i landed a 2m bullshark on that combo last week, and it performed admirably over the 25 min fight. Cant do much better than that.
and only $145 rod after a bit of haggling.
cheers

Do these rods have big guides for line travel? I'm also looking for a spin rod for throwing metal slugs around 25 grams and have found a lot of spin rods with small guides impeed line travel. Since I'm after distance a rod with bigger open guides is what I'm after.
Thanks, Mark.

pretty sure they would have standard size ones if you are referring to the starlo ones, even the raiders and pfluegers are like that i think. Look for Bobby Loomis blanks by Gary Howard built rods. I have a 6-10kg one and they cost a fortune but yes they do have the larger than normal diameter guides on them designed for getting distance throwing slugs/slices/lures. im pretty sure you can get one in the 4-7 line class. Jones's tackle stock them. very very nice rods. deep pockets needed though.

The Starlo Stix tournament have quite large guides. You won't have issues with knots rattling through. The current theory is that small guides aid casting distance but I hate them when they choke at a knot

Horse that's an interesting one. I've heard the opposite and it's not just about knots. I'm about to buy a T-curve GT special and a big point Shimano make about this rod is it has large guides to aid casting distance.
I currently have a relatively cheap rod for my Stella 5000 and I reckon it's the thin guides (and too many of them) that affect distance. I have an even cheaper one that works better as it has less guides.

Well here's my opinion mate.
Currently having the same dilemma as I got "oliver twist" a few weeks back, got on the net and bought a 4000 stradic from the US.
Choices are:
Shaimno Raider (~$100)
Shimano Starlo Tournament (~$130)
Berkley Tournament (~$250)
Nitro Mag Butt (~$330)
Easily the Mag Butt is the best. All I need is a balaclava......
