Just finished my first batch of Ultra Minnow jigheads in sizes from 1/2 oz to 4 oz and thought I'd share some of my research into hook selection.
I have tried Owner, Gamakatsu, Eagle Claw and Mustad heavy duty jighooks and all are pretty similar in sizing except Gamakatsu which are two sizes smaller than the other brands.
All are pretty close in the thickness of the wire used in making the hooks but Mustad 32784 needle point are slightly heavier gauge wire, same sharpness of hook point but have a larger eye which is better for attaching heavy leader line and won't clog when powder coated.
Unlike the other brands Mustad have a selection of large very strong jighooks 7/0 to 9/0 for those large jigheads which are useful in depths greater than 80 metres or when the current is strong.
I have attached pics of the hooks and the finished jigheads.
Cheers

I had intended selling some on Ausfish to help cover the cost of the bulk hooks, powder paint and 3D eyes but the first batch of 300 have all been snapped up by two charter operators and three fishermen on one of the charters who saw how effective they were when they saw my mate Frank nail snapper and longtail tuna using one of the jigheads.
I have ordered another batch of hooks from the States and will make another 500 next week. I will then advertise a few in the classified section of Ausfish.

Mate if you can't catch fish with these jigheads its time to hang up the rods:smiley:
I am getting phone calls from fishos who have been informed of the first hand accounts of the success of these jigheads. I don't know wheather there will be any left to advertise on Ausfish. Might have to give up retirement and really make some serious numbers.

Sean,
Yes mate the 3/4 and 1oz ones are popular for offshore up to 70 metres. I make them with 5/0 and 6/0 Mustad 32786 (heavy duty tempered needle point) and Mustad 34184 ( extra heavy duty forged tarpon hooks).
They work well with plastics and bait attached or done up with a bucktail. White and blue glow the brightest.
Cheers
