Hi .
i need your advice. I have just got a Diawa ballistic surf rod. I have plenty of good thread lines to use with it, however, the rod is made double handed and i would like to get a new overhead with levelwind for it. There is so much out there and every shop has its own story. I am very experienced in using overheads and own abu's and a couple of millionaires.
What do you guys use and recommend. I will be using it mostly for lure casting and the threadlines on the surf.
Thanks in advance

I have recently upgraded from Penn 500 jigmaster (25 yrs of service!!) o/head reels to the Daiwa Sealine X50.
For the money it is the best there is out there I.M.H.O. $190 incl freight I paid.
I do not like the level wind on a surf reel, as it loses too much distance on the cast. Check out the free spool feature on this Daiwa ..... it casts a mile (if you are experienced and do not get crow's nests)
Has a very fast retrieve (6.2 to 1) so good for pelagics.
The reel is not as tough as the Penns of old ..... but a superb machine in every way. I will HIGHLY RECOMMEND this reel. 8-)
There is also a deal on at GO Fishing - Nerang. $39 for a ABU Garcia GT reel with level wind. But after 3 outings I have removed the level wind as it was sticky. The reel is a cheap n nasty that will never last more than 3 yrs ... and also the drag may burn out when the first 10kg + Trevally gets you going south .... but not bad for the price :D
What length is your rod?
I have a 14ft fibreglass medium action, casting with 4oz sinker, or 90 - 110g lure. Easily cast over 110mtr every time. Am wanting to go 14'6 graphite PURGLAS stroke 4 from Souff Efrika. Then can use 6-7 oz sinker and be throwing 150mtr :D Pleading with the minister of external affairs at the mo ::)

The ballistic is 13'3" and 3 pce . casting weight is 2 - 10 oz with line up to 15 kg. i need level wind unfortunately as i have arthritis in my fingers and is murder to lay line manually. I was also looking at the diawa saltist. I will only be using no more than 6 oz.

I was looking at the daiwa saltist overhead with levelwind to go with the saltiga rod. Any one got one or heard anything about these?
Thanks

Beautiful rod Dudley, I'd be looking at a threadline though.
Emblem Pro 5500 - 5:1, 1.22 metres retrieve per turn of handle.
Cast a mile too.

Thanks for the info nigelr. I do have a saltiga surf 6000 which i used on sat. It does cast very well with a single bait an 5/6 oz . what i want is an overhead to cast lures for the big salmon and tailor, Some of the local experienced fishos are getting mor than150 yds with a 110 gm lure. They practice on the local footy ground with the trebles off. Thats serious distance

I'm thinking the levelwind might be the bugbear with 110gms.
We have a member 'HSV' who is a distance caster, he would be able to give you some good advice.

Thanks nigelr. Unfortunately as you get older you get things like arthritis. i have it in my left thumb so manually lining a reel is murder. i had to give up game fishing due to it. The saltist and saltiga come without levelwind as well. They are brilliant casting and fishing reels and i was tempted but i know what comes next. lol!
