hi everyone, i'm new to the forum and this will be my first question.
like i said in my introduction i'm hoping to move to australia. Visa all applied for, checked out jobs and all that boring lark now to the important bit........fishing!!
Where would be a good place to start? i'm after big predators and i like the look of those barras and sharks too, i'll mainly be landbased depending how much boats cost.
I'm asking for your favourite hotspots, just a good all round bit of coastline.
Thanks
Doug.

Doug,
Where you live will depend on the type of job you can get, or are qualified for. i.e. if you have experience in the mining industry type of jobs, then
you have a range of places where you might end up.
Where are you currently living?

If you're having any trouble getting into the country, I may be able to help.
For an up front fee of lets say, about $20 000 to $100 000, I could get you to Cape York by light aircraft.
Then you're on your own.
Do we have a deal?

It all depends on what kind of area you wanna live in.
Somewhere close to city, up north where its much of a less population but super fishing, beachside, a suburban local person or whatever - if you tell us what kinda lifestyle you wanna live we can work around it :)

Consider weipa it's all there + the option to wander wider when time allows, another is Darwin if you like big towns, rents and house prices will be stupid compared to over there but your exchange rate should help out some.
Another is Broom, seriously all of these places are not for everybody many move and come back not that long after.
good luck

up north is the go ...but...being a pommy you might find the weather and humidity a challange ...... not knowing how hardy you may be to steaming conditions prob should start brisbane ish and go from there .... once you got a job others are quite easy to come by...
never being to west aus ....and a bit bias any where on the east cost is awsome north of sydney ....

yeah doug,
far north queensland would be best... barra, sharks, crocks, marlin etc...and if ur landbased lookout for the pigs...and snakes, spiders etc
and the weather is so much like englands you'll hardly notice the difference....
cept maybe in summer..... or spring and maybe winter and autum...

For about half that price I can get you your own boat out of Indonesia (when I say your own you will have to share with some Sri Lankain....err....business associates of mine).
I can even get you a an autographed photo of Shapelle Corby and a Naval escort for the last 100 or so kilometers. They will take you to the fishing paradise of Christmas Island where you will be able to hone your land based fishing techniques to your hearts content...
But in reality, take their advice go North!

How about somewhere in South Australia? Not sure about jobs, but the weather might suit a pommie a lot better than NQ. They get some big snapper, king george whiting and heaps of salmon. Probably only the salmon landbased though.

DIARY OF A POMMY IN QUEENSLAND
August 31 - Just transferred to our new home in Brisbane Queensland . Now this is a town that knows how to live! Beautiful, sunny days and warm, balmy evenings. I watched the sunset from a deckchair by the pool yesterday. It was beautiful. I've finally found my new home. I love it here.
September 13 - Really heating up now. It got to 31 today. No problem though. Living in air-conditioned home, driving air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this. I'm turning into a sun-worshipper.
September 30th - Had the back yard landscaped with tropical plants today. Lots of palms and rocks. No more mowing lawns for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.
October 10th - The temperature hasn't been below 35 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least today it's windy though. Keeps the flies off a bit. Acclimatizing is taking longer than I expected.
October 15th - Fell asleep by the pool yesterday. Got third degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed three days of work. What a dumb thing to do! Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.
October 20th - Didn't notice Kitty (our cat) sneaking into the Mazda before I left for work this morning. By the time I got back to the car after work, Kitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stuck to the upholstery. The car now smells like Whiskettes and cat sh.it. I've earned my lesson though: no more pets in this heat.
October 25 - This wind is a b.astard. It feels like a giant friggin blow dryer. And it's hot as hell! The home air conditioner is on the blink and the repair man charged $200 just to drive over and tell me he needs to order parts from friggin Sydney ....
October 30th - The temperature's up around 40 and the parts still haven't arrived for the friggin aircon. Been sleeping outside by the pool for three nights now. Bloody $600,000 house and we can't even go inside. Why the hell did I ever come here?
November 4 - Finally got the ol' aircon fixed. It cost $1,500 and gets the temperature down to around 25 degrees, but the humidity makes it feel about 30. Stupid repairman.
November 8 - If one more smart arse says 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to friggin throttle him. friggin heat! By the time I get to work, the car's radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking friggin wet and I smell like baked cat!
November 9 Tried to run some errands after work, wore shorts, and sat on the black leather upholstery in the ol' car. I thought my friggin arse was on fire. I lost two layers of flesh, all the hair on the backs of my legs and my friggin arse. Now the car smells like burnt hair, fried arse and baked cat!
November 10 - Weather report! It might as well be a friggin recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny, Hot and friggin sunny! It's been too hot to do anything for two friggin months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.
November 15 - Doesn't it ever rain in this damn friggin place? Water restrictions will be next, so my $5,000 worth of palms might just dry up and blow into the friggin pool. The only things that thrive in this hell-hole are the friggin flies. You don't dare open your mouth for fear of swallowing half a dozen of the suckers!
November 20th - Welcome to HELL! It got to 45 friggin degrees today. Now the air conditioner's gone in my car. The repair man came to fix it and said, 'Hot enough for you today?' I had to spend the $2,500 mortgage payment to bail me out of jail for assaulting the stupid b.astard friggin Brisbane! What kind of sick, demented friggin idiot would want to live here!

a large city aint really my style, but don't want to be miles from civilization....if thats possable in australia. less than a hours drive for fishing would be a bonus too, closer better.
one thing i didnt consider was the heat, although one reason i'm moving is cos i'm fed up with bloody snow, i had enough of camping out in minus 6-7 and waking up in a igloo.
Thanks for all the feedback

And use South Africans to win cricket matches - but thats a whole other story :P
If you can handle the heat, the best fishing is on the coast north of Bundaberg - the further north you go the better it gets. Your big towns/districts are Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Mackay, Whitsundays district, Townsville, Cairns. After Cairns it gets smaller and everything is spaced a lot further apart.
If you can't handle the heat - then Hobart is great all year round, alot like England really. Some good fishing too if you don't mind frostbite.

I think Brisbane will fit you perfectly. 1-2 hours drive to the best fishing locations provided, though, no barras but plenty and plenty of sharks (no joke, a shitload of sharks). And it the temps aren't too hot (not as much as up north).

to be honest sharks are my main target, what else can be caught along that coast with land based methods?

I'm based 2 hrs west of Mackay and still get out wide a fair bit. With your tyre fitting trade Doug, you should have no problems getting a job in your trade in the mining industry. You can base yourself in Mackay or Rockahampton if you wish and will be able to afford to fish on your days off.
As for the fishing, there are fresh water species in the dams like Kinchant and Peter Faust at Proserpine (monster barra) and the saltwater stuff is pretty good too. There are a lot of estuary systems around the Mackay coast, from Carmilla in the south to the Gregory River near Bowen in the north.
Then there's the reef....

Mate ,dead set if you want sharks , The Gold Coast is the place. Surfers Paradise has more sharks per head of population than anywhere else in Australia.( We are talking about the 2 legged variety arent we?)If you dont mind living in an isolated area try Melbourne (they are all up here in Qld.) so there will be plenty of room for you. Dont come to Queeensland we have enough people here already & I dont want to share the few fish we have with any more people. So it is settled Melbourne it is!!!!!

Great post. I had a good laugh. When you find that fishing spot, let me know. I have been here 15 years and I am still looking!
Being Brisbane based isn't bad. Close access to northern NSW and Sunshine coast.
