Cheers Boys.

sorry for the late reply but i havent been on here much lately.

I had big richie down from Darwin and he got me keen to fish a comp with him after not fishing many in the last year or so.

After all the rain we had had the week prior i knew my spots up the nerang would be hard work. I didnt make a final decision on where to fish until i got down and saw the colour of the water.

I decided we would start at the seaway and crank the north walls and try and follow the cleaner water in with the tide.

We were lucky enough to draw 3rd position for the start and got down to the seaway first. dropped the lecky and punched the first cast out with a deep chubby. About 5 cranks into the retrieve got nailed and line started stripping from the little Luvius. Mid fight on my fish Rich got slammed and drilled back into the rocks. Boat my fish and he goes a nice 35f/l next cast i lost a fish of the same calibur and hooked straight into another good fish 32f/l The fisrt 20 mins saw us with a bag and boats were still driving past us to start fishing. After a crazy 45 min hot bite with close to 30 fish boated it slowed right down. slugged it out for the rest of the day with another 15-20 fish boated for 1 upgrade.

We kept the boat in tight along the walls and cast paralell as far as we could. Most action came on long casts when the lures were smashin into the bottom. we fished depths from 0-8ft. There was plenty of bait pushed in tight to the rocks and alot of fish were hooked under these schools.

Most fish were caught on deep chubbies in clear and brown suji shrimp. A few fish fell to shallow chubbies in clear ayu and ghost wakasargi, luckycraft cra-peas in american shad. Rich got a few small fish on 2in shrimps but i mainly fished deep running cranks which proved most sucessful in the dirty water.

Started with 4lb leaders and moved up to 6lb with the dirty water and when looking for bigger upgrades. We lost 3 good fish back into the walls on the 4lb leaders.

Rods were all loomis with waleye 8400 and 8500 used to punch out long casts the stiffer rods were great for this and extracting the bigger fish but cost us some good fish through pulled hooks. We would get the fish clear of the walls and back the drags right off. The sr842 glx rods were much better for not pulling the hooks but didnt quite have the power to pull the fish from some of the narly rocks or
the punch for the casts in the stiff winds. Reels were all Daiwa 2500 and 2000 sized Luvius and Certates spooled with sunline castaway and rock fish with V-hard leaders

Was good to have another memorable session with a great mate even if he ended up with his ass handed to him in the fishing department. Plenty of laughs and heaps of friendly banter. I think i might need to fly Richie down for every comp with the last 4 ive fish with him our record stands at 2 1st, 1 2nd and 1 3rd. Hes my lucky black charm. (If only you can get some fish for the well next time mate)

Big thanks go out to the gamakatsu team for putting on a great comp. Great set up, great giveaways and great prizemoney. A great comp for the seasoned tourny guys or new fellas wanting to have a crack. The skyring bros who finished in second place were fishing there fisrt ever bream comp and took home a swag of cash and prizes.

Also a big thanks to the guys at Budds Bait and Tackle at Cleveland for their ongoing support. The guys have a great range of gear and lures for bream to marlin so get down and have a look.

Cheers Whytey

ahhhhhh. My little unit of "whyte" power. Was certainly a memorable fish and yes I will hand it to you, you certainly led the way this time around.
Maybe I should get you up for the Barra Nats this year??
All in all tho, Nick's nailed it on the head. Without a bit of local knowledge and a plan that we nanaged to stick to we too would have found it tough.
That was one of the hottest bream bites I've experienced and was quite a challenge for me to get my trigger hand around 4lb which is very different from casting 40lb for barra. I managed a few but not in the ball park to upgrade the big fella's fish.
Certainly will be down for the GF in October. May even be sussing out a new home to live in down there if I get moved back down for work altho I'm in no hurry.
Thanks Nicko for the great catch up mate and I'll be in touch after my Moyle river assault aboard a luxury cat.....meteries here comes Richie. Yes I do miss Darwin and can't wait to get back Sunday!

Richie

PS: Ying and Yang strike again. LOL!
