Hey,
Has anyone gone to the Plantation Island Resort in Fiji and done any organised fishing trips with them. They offer 'Game Fishing' which means you could get some bloke high on kava taking you out for a passive troll around with a rusted lure. Does anyone know of any reputable charter operations in Mamanuca Islands area 10nm west of Nadi.

Cheers

I have stayed there. There game fishing trips were overpriced and crap and exactly how you described it.

I stayed there 10 years ago mind you.

I took my own gear and one of the beach boys organised to take me out in one of the banana boats right on dusk. He used a spoon on a planer board on a handline and I used my tld 25 pulling a skirt for tuna. We cleaned up on tuna just near cloud break surf spot and got some trevally on the way back. The planer board spoon was the way to go so some super deep divers would have been good however I didn't have any. Cost was like 100 Aussie for 3 hours and came back when it was dark. THis guy could fish.

On the actual charter boat we got one small tuna for a huge cost.

Went for a snorkel at a sand cay a few k's from the island, there were barracuda and trevally waiting for someone with a spin rod and a popper.

I was there just a month ago doing that very thing.
I went out on the Gamefishing trip. There were supposed to be four anglers, but only two of us fronted. The skipper took us out nonetheless and we had a great morning out on the water. The boat is average to poor, the gear is average and the fish didn't play the game. We did jag a small Barracuda which didn't interest me. If we had hooked a decent fish, we would have struggled!!
The Fijians do their best on a very poor budget.
PM me if you would like more info

Hi. I was at Plantation island about a month ago and had a few dramas getting onto a charter. The preterder fishermen were booking charters days in advance leaving no vacancies for serious fishermen then canceling the night before leaving a less than average jet powered fishing boat sitting in the morings.

I was left stranded sitting on the jetty at 5.30 in the morning waiting for a boat that didn't show. Got sick of being stuffed around by Plantation island resort so I booked with Dolphin Star fishing charters from Musket Cove Resort just next door to Plantation Island Resort. These guys had half decent boats and reasonable gear. Reels were TLD 50 with Live Fibre rods but the skirted lures were well and truly used but still worked. The charter cost $A100 per person for a half day. We fished about 10 km west of Cloudbreak and from 2 adults and 2 kids on board we boated 4x 12kg mahi mahi and lost another 4 Mahi Mahi plus a few other tuna. I can only recommend these guys as the crew were keen and did their very best to catch us some fish. Would love to attac some photos if someone will explaine how.

We had a great day.

One of the places I know about that is fair dinkum about their fishing is Mantaray Island Resort. Never been there, dunno where it is but I know the Irvines are a fishing family from back here.

The other one that pops up magazines all the time is Adrian Watt's boat Bite Me.

The other guy to track down is Greg "Mudguts" Edwards who was driving the 44' Assegai Megumi. It might have been sold. Dunno.

Everyone is on island time!! I guess thats what makes the place so good to go to but other times it can be frustrating. thanks for that guys. good point bout how they do a good job with limited resources at hand. I think i might take my own gear (t-cruve 24kg rod with 14000 spheros) and hopefully get into some dolphins fish as russ tussled with. will take some skirted hollow points and bibless numbers. might use some of those poppers that have been in my tackle box for about five years still in wrappers!!
