graphite or carbon fibre rods make a reasonable conductor he was lucky

You wouldn't catch me out paddling about with lightning conductors (graphite rods) sticking up out of my rod holders during a storm.
I had actually planned on going out in the yak early on Sunday morning but cancelled my trip with the thunder and lighting still lingering. This article just confirms I made the correct decision.

I have been caught out there in a couple of storms.
Not a nice feeling at all.
I have been inside a house that got hit by lightning and that was bad enough!
Lucky kid.
