Caboolture River Thursday

Decided to take the wife and her sister(and the dog) for a run up the Caboolture River. Launched at the Uhlam Rd ramp at about 1pm on the high tide (what a bugger of a ramp at high tide ,dead flat). Proceed up river with the old Johno 35 struggling with th weight of these 2 women on board ( size 12 &14 (if you listen to them!) Was most surprised at the depth of the river even way up the sounder was reading 17ft,24ft and even 32ft which was about the width of the river at this point. Anyway a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon, until cruising along I got distracted and forgot that I had put the canopy up for the gals and ran into a dead tree hanging over the water. What with the wife SCREAMING (Im sure the heard her at the VMR at Bribie) and with a downpour of broken twigs the dog decided to abandon ship. After returning to the dead tree that jumped into our path and retrieving the dog proceeded to bail out the twiggs and proceed with no damage appart from my eardrums which still echoed from the wife's sreams.
Reached the weir at cabooltue and returned to the ramp at about 4.30 pm.
For anyone that has not done this trip it is worth while if only to see the houses and very large boats moored this far up the river.

Hey Crabbie,

Thanks for the post - it is nice sometimes to remember that you can have a pleasant time just boating, not worrying about the fish-to-fuel consumed ratio, if you know what I mean.

I suppose the other thing to mention is that the Uhlmann Rd ramp is a thousand times better at high tide than low - and she stops pretty abruptly at the end. Just something to look out for.

Yep, took the family for a little tinny cruise through pacific harbour over the Chrissy break. It's quite enjoyable just puttering past big houses and boats. Never done the Caboolture river but sounds nice.

have looked on google earth a bit at that river, looks like some great jack country, is it easily navigable? all teh way up? many rock or gravel bars?

The river is pretty good-- Bakers flat is one place you need to watch as it gets pretty shallow. Follow the markers and you should have no trouble. Catch some decent jacks if you know where to go and good flattie country.

best time for a trip-- now before the development starts and we haven't got a river worth fishing. :-[

I grew up fishing this river and using the Ulhman Ramp plenty of times. Launching/retrieving at high tide, don't even bother with the ramp. Use the bank on the left if you can.

What ever you do, don't leave your car there after dusk. I've lost spotties,cd players and even had lumps of concrete thrown at it......

As for sand bars just go for a drive at low tide, bakers flat and i think the corner before Goong creek gets shallow(Don't quote me. its one of the area where the river comes close to Beachmere rd). Its only sand thankfully haven't found any shallow rock bars yet.
