Had a mate fly down from Darwin last week to do a spot of fishing, as the monsoon up north had flooded all his spots.
Now you might think that the fishing around Brissy is not a patch on Darwin (and you would probably be right;)), but we managed a couple of successful days and landed some great fish.

Day 1. Headed up to Lowood to fish the upper Brisbane River out of my scanoe. Managed to land five nice bass (29cm - 38cm) with my mate landing 3 of them. Even though we started fishing at 5am, the topwater scene was quiet and all our fish fell for deep divers cast as close to the snags as possible. Bycatch included spangled perch and forktail catfish.

Day 2. Launched the Wahoo from Colmslie and headed over to the sandhills in Moreton Bay. Target species were tuna and spotties. There were birds working the area just outside the 'go slow' areas and these were shadowing Watsons Leaping Bonito.
After landing about 10 - 15 of these little scrappers on small slugs and fly, we decided to see what was on offer further up the bay. We saw more schools of bonito working off Shark Spit, but out wide near the shipping channel buoys, were some enormous splashes. These turned out to be longtails ranging from 10kg to 20+kg. We had one shot and the Darwin lad hooked a neat 13 kg model on 6kg mono. (My preference over braid for tuna chasing).
When we returned to the area, the fish had sounded, so we rounded out the trip with a snorkel at the Tangalooma wrecks before heading home.

The point is, we need to make the most of what we have on offer here in SEQ, and even though there is more competition fo the resource, we are still luckier than most.:D
