Hi all,
Going over to the dark side. Sort of. I want to chase smaller billfish with lures. East of Moreton up to Mbah. I am OK for rods & reels but I have no skirted lures. I want to start with a basic kit & work up if I like it.
Boat (Fisher 6400) does not have outriggers but has 45 deg rodholders running off the corners of the hardtop. I was thinking perhaps two lines from these.
Any advice on colours, heads, rigging lines & hooks would be greatly appreciated.
Plus there would be some gratis offshore trips for anybody willing to pass on some "on the water" advice.;D;D;D;D

Lumo on one, and either a black/purple or black/red on the other if you are only running two. Mozzie or Sprocket head ........6-8". (Donning flak jacket and ducking for cover while everyone else posts 'better' alternatives). I use these on 8kg tackle....when specifically targetting small billfish.

One of my golden rules is....no matter how many lures are in a spread....one of them has to be a lumo.

I am sure Troy will put you on the right track as well.

Cheers
Greg

Pinks and Purple are the go also a split tail mullet if you can rig them they are great for small bill fish, I am also keen to try the new plastic skippin gar I just saw at BCF they look pretty good. Most important is the teasers/flashers got to get em up to have a look!!!

Pete - plenty of info on the other site to get you started from Rob etc. I think Mick has just gone through similar questions to get up and going on the stickfaces.

You dont need outriggers for the little fellas. Just run short and long corners plus a shotgun. Uzi/Fluzi on the shottie, something lumo on the long cnr and something darker in close that will push a bit of water. Throw the witchdoctor out the back and youre billfishing.

For the rest - I am just running TLD30As on STP10s on 8kg. Run a double to a quality snap, about 1.5m of 100/150 lb Jinkai or similar with crimped single SL12 hooks. Position the lure for the hook with a laccy band.

Make yourself up a billrope and buy a hook extractor gun and tag pole etc if you are going down that track.

You dont need to spend mega bucks to get going. It is as simple and cheap as you want to make it.
