Hi all,
planning a week trip to cairns/port douglas with the mrs. in early january for 6 days. plan is to do the barrier reef tour, rainforest tour, two days barra fishing with guide, 1 day reef fishing and 1 day relaxing.
Need some adivice on a good guide to take us out for a couple of days barra fishing. neither of us has ever caught barra before so really keen to get onto some large specimens. Anyone used a good guide up around cairns/port douglas before.
any names and phone number, email adresses etc appreciated.
thanks

Hi Ismail,
January is closed season for barra mate except for stocked impoundments - so your only option to chase some barra will be at Tinaroo. Not sure what guides work up there - but if you narrowed your research down to there am sure you'll track someone down (Jack Leighton used to be the main guide up there - but I think he may have given it away??)
If you want a big barra around Cairns, Tinaroo is your best bet anyway. (Its roughly 1hr 15 mins - 1hr 30 mins drive from cairns up on the tablelands.)
Cheers,
Moffy

Still plenty of options mate. You can hire a guide to chase Jacks, Fingermark and Threadfin (with bycatch of Barra).
If you have never caught a Barra before, a wild fish is 10 x more enjoyable than a fat arse Tinaroo fish.
There are still plenty of salt Barra caught on guided charters over the wet around Cairns. Your better bet wouldbe to hire a guide to fish the Russell and Mulgrave river systems. These systems are 10 X quiter with boat traffic and often fish a lot better.

Cairns is often a hard ask as a fishing destination unless with pockets deep enough to hire a crew and a 40 footer...you will be at the weathers, distance and green zones mercy.
The rainforest will still be fully unrecovered from the dry season and it has been a doozy this year, Tinaroo should be working well as the water will have warmed up the last 2 months, offshore will depend on the wind and weather, you may not even see a trip because of it but still early January we can see a few calm muggy but bloody hot! days strung together.
Here is a website with some guides www.fishingcairns.com.au (http://www.fishingcairns.com.au) sure there are others too in the smaller boat categorys.
cheers fnq

thanks, didnt realise it was closed season for barra, but work commitement rest of year means we only get time off over xmas new years break to ge away for more than a couple of days.
I will speak with a few guides about chasing jacks and fingermark but if a barra jumps on well, all the better :-)
