I was fishing off Fraser Island recently and we were trying something different and fished in fairly deep water - 245m and came up with this fish. The eyes were a solid amber colour, any ideas on what it might have been.

now thats deep sea fishing at that depth, deep tempest is around 90 - 100 metres, you would get sore arms from reeling it in from that depth, especially with a decent fish hooked on..
cheers

Jus, my first thought was a nanygai but I had my doubts.

robsue, big deck winch, and yes it was chore, we were chasing bar tailed cod that we had heard about, didn't get any but was an interesting exercise. We did get another oddity and have since found out that it was a rough scaled soldier fish but I am still not sure about this one.

SR, I did find a hawaiin fish called a big eye which looked similar (not the pelagic Big Eye) but wasn't sure. I will check out the Priacanthus species.

Blooey, I suspect it isn't a bullseye, too deep for them I would have thought.

Myles, same thought as previously stated but I need to look up "Priacanthus" as mentioned by Sr to be sure.

Just found it here is link, called Priacanthus Meeki, I think.

Ok - the anal fin is different, but otherwise close. SR - is there a common name for these fish - Big Eye seems appropriate.
