Environment Minister Peter Garrett met with conservation groups last week to discuss the Commonwealth's review of marine protection zones.
The Government is currently considering creating marine sanctuaries in the south-west region, from Geraldton to Kangaroo Island.
It has also made a commitment to assess the need for greater protection along the entire Australian coastline by 2012.
A new poll has found that more than 60 per cent of Australians want greater marine protection on the south-west coastline.
Up to 90 per cent of the marine life here is found nowhere else in the world, yet less than 1 per cent of the region is protected.
The survey of 4,000 people found nearly two-thirds want at least half the area to be given greater protection.
Michelle Grady, from the Pew Environment Group who commissioned the poll, says people are concerned that so little of the ocean is protected from major activities.
'It's very, very important that we take this opportunity to protect them,' she said.
Ms Grady says large marine parks must be established if key ocean species are to survive.
'The Australian people want to see far higher levels of marine protection than currently exists in Australian waters,' she said.
'Less than 1 per cent of this area is protected and with the oil spill this week, it's clear there are significant risks out there in the marine environment and the insurance we need to put in place is large marine sanctuaries.'
OK hands up who voted for labor :-/ :-[ :-[

Funny isn't it? That the people who commissioned the 'poll' got the answer they wanted? Like the participants had a choice in what they were going to say the way the 'poll' would have been structured and worded. Participants were probably interviewed and screened beforehand anyway so pew would get their desired result.
I don't know why pew just down pi ss off and stop telling us how to run our country when they've got their own that needs "protecting"....oh wait I know why, because all their funding comes from OIL and they don't want to upset the people that pay their salary.....f'n hypocrites

no no no..... they arent so crude as to make a disrepresentative sample........they just ask cleverly structured questions in the right order...
the question to ask the politcian quoting the 60%........is......exactly what was the question the survey asked.
I almost guarantee a majority of those on this board would have answered yess to the questions they are using to justify their 60%.
there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.........and then there are surveys.

As sheeple we live till we die.
Sheeple also want more police powers, yet they already have near as much or effectively as much as under Martial law legislation.
Polling relies on sheeple, as do the pollies it seems.

I have seen many many people and posts over the years who are outraged by the way our lifestyles are being taken from us and even more importantly, our kids and theirs. Yet when meetings are held and groups are formed, nobody shows. Eventually something will give. The fisherman, as always becasue we do F all to stop the better organised groups we label as Greenies.
The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things the same way and expect a different result. so keep whining and whingeing and doing F all and you will get the same result every time. YOU LOSE. sorry guys but nobody is going to do this for you. Get off your arses and do it for yourself and your family of shut up about it.
P.S.
ITS NOT TOO LONG NOW UNTIL THE ELECTION.....DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...

welcome to reality kids ................ you've just discovered what we are .................... a minority group.
i don't deny that surveys, unless done properly, are the biggest load of krapola ever, but you guys have got to face it that most of the population are in favour of some form of protection of our environment even if that is a green zone. i also don't deny that most of the public don't know anything about the science behind it all (me included). but reality is that votes count and unless the public, which outnumbers fishos by a zillion to one, can be convinced that green zones are a load of rubbish then the government will do whatever is necessary to stay in power.
i personally do not claim to understand any science behind any of this, and i am a fisho/boatie, but i still agree with having zones in a marine park where you cannot anchor and cannot fish. how big those zones should be and where they are placed is beyond my little brain however. it all sort of makes common sense to me and it looks like it makes common sense to the general population of this country as well judging by the figures in that survey. i do like the suggestions of some people that maybe some of our green zones should have been yellow though.

A famous saying attributed to Benjamin Disraeli (http://www.ausfish.com.au/wiki/Benjamin_Disraeli) is,
"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics (http://www.ausfish.com.au/wiki/Lies,_damned_lies,_and_statistics)."
Damn oldboot beat me. I ve been itchin to use that quote.

The article was on www.powerboat-world.com (http://www.powerboatworld.com)
It makes me smile when she states that because of the oil spill we need large marine sanctuaries to stop this. Don't they mine uranium in kakadu.
being a national park doesn't stop mining if the government of the day decides it wants it to go ahead

the state government also published similar figures to justify the moreton bay rezonings......the figures were a twisting of responses to the consultation documents.......
I should have known better when I saw the questions in the documents..........when they sprouted the figures to justiy their point the penny droped.

"A new poll has found that more than 60 per cent of Australians want greater marine protection on the south-west coastline. "
And 60% of any population wouldn't know a marine species from a urology specimen. Maybe re-word the poll question:
1) Should the Australian government continue to establish marine parks that ban Australians from recreational fishing whilst allowing big business to export over 2 billion dollars of Australia's fish stocks including fish used in cat-food production?
