I am heading to Townville in mid October and planning some fishing trips around Magnetic Island and the reefs off Townsville before heading off to Hinchinbrook Island.

I would like to try some soft plastics (7" Gulp Jerkshads) and would appreciate any feedback/local knowledge on suitable jig head weights. I'm looking at taking some TT Head Hunter Extremes in 6/0 size and thinking 3/8 to 3/4 oz weights should suit.

Am I on the right track or should I be taking lighter or heavier jig heads?

I just came back from the South Alligator river in NT and fished some offshore reefs in about 45ft of water, moderate current.

I used the Nitro 3/8oz in 3/0, 1/2oz in 3/0 and 5/8 in 5/0. This was perfect for that scenario. I was using 5" Gulp Jerkshads, if you are going to use 7" ones i reckon you will need to go to 5/0 hook sizes to get some hook exposure.

Your on the right track though. Throw in some 3/4oz and 1oz heads and i reckon that will about cover you.

Thanks Kevvie. I think that the equivalent hook sizes in the Nitro jig heads are a bit bigger than the TT i.e a 5/0 Nitro is about the same size as the 6/0 TT so I'm looks like I'm on the right track.
