View Full Version : Missing some drag washers?

Hello,

I just purchased a second hand pflueger trion baitcaster reel from someone on ebay... Now before you say anything I already own two other pflueger reels and absolutely love them. They run rings around my similarly priced Daiwa gear..

Right, where was I? That's right! I was getting it spooled up with it was mentioned that my drag wasn't working very well, that it was past were it should have locked up and that it was still quite loose.
So, when I came home I pulled her apart and it appears that there are only TWO drag washers in there. MY Pflueger illusions schematics are the same save for the different breaking systems and it specifies that there should be a total of 5 drag washers.

They stated that the reel was recently serviced.. Does it sound plausable that whoever serviced it failed to put the other three washers in?

Any suggestions as to how I might obtain replacements?

Cheers :)

Matt.

Go into www.mikesreelrepair.com (http://www.mikesreelrepair.com) open up the fishing reel schematics and you'll find pflueger grouped with the shakespear gear, the trions are down the page a bit,you should find your model there somewhere to confirm the correct number. If any are missing any decent tackle shop will be able to get some providing they are still available.

Thanks for that.. According to the schematic the reel only has two drag washers... So now I'm at a loss to explain why I just about have to tighten the star with a spanner to get a reasonable ammount of drag out of her. :-/

Alright.. I've tried adding an extra washer courtesy of my alvey reel and whilst I am getting greater drag it's still only when wound up terribly tight.

Is the problem due to the fact the drag washers have been oiled? I tried to dry them as much as I could, but I don't think I can really remove all that oil without drastic measures.

All of the parts are there, so that's the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Sounds like it might be the GO...

I used the reel today and asides from this drag issue she's marvelous, especially for what I paid.

I've matched it to a Mojiko Tournament 6-10kg 10-25gr baitcast rod. I think it's 5'9" or so. I'm able to cast my 3/8 ounce heads a country mile, which I didn't expect. I havn't caught a fish on it yet but based on loading it up with my line tied to a bucket of water.. oh my, these rods are fantastic, it loads up in such a manner that it casuses all within 1km to orgasm.

I don't suppose someone can give me an idea where I can get replacement washers?

If Jack does not already havethem made you can send the old ones up and he will make them. You could also try rubbing your washers gently on a bit of 180 wet & dry. I have saved a lot of glazed drags this way

Cheers Horse, I'll give it a shot.

It's OK with the second washer that I've added for the short term, so I can at least use the outfit.

Mate I have the same reel and after updating to Carbotex, its made a big difference. One of the drag washers is actually plastic or nylon from memory.

That's the same reel?

I'm starting to wonder... I have one washer that is metal and another which is some sort of fibre. It's stamped and when I first looked at it I had wondered if it was a replacement washer put in when the reel was serviced. Perhaps they've put one in that is too thin? I'll rip it apart tommorow and take a photo.

Mate contact Jack Erskine in Cairns and he will supply drag washers or contact your tackle store and they will order them for you

Yep, he has confirmed they have them to suit my reel at a reasonable $16~ per set. I'm ordering one set for me and one for my mate :)
