could someone please clue me up on jigging

when, for what, how, what gear is necessary, what gear can you get away with.

Picked up some jigs cheap, and what to have some idea of how to start using them.

where, what colours, what size / weight, etc, etc

example photo attached. Williamson ABYSS jig, 3 1/2 oz (100g) jig I picked up for $8.50 and can get lots more of them in different sizes.

I have to say I had the wrong idea of a jigs action.... I assumed that they just worked straight up and down. But while I was playing with one the other night in crystal clear water, I was watching the action (Could see the luminescent glow)

The jig ripped up vertically, then shot out sideways on the drop, and I mean really sideways - must have shot off 5 + feet, and it is totally unpredictable which way it will shoot off each time you rip it up and let it drop. I can see why it would set a big fish off with the action. On the drop it actually seems to swim off like a bait fish instead of falling vertically.

Anyway, I'm keen to land a fish on a jig, so where do i start

cheers

Hi Mick,

There were two articles in QFM on starting out with jigging. I can't remember if it was Dec/Jan or Jan/Feb of this year. Explained the different jigs, gear, what to do etc. There are many different style of jigs (tail weighted, centre weighted....) each one will have a different action and you can use different retrieves to get the best out of them. Where are you based and what depths are you planning to jig?

Cheers,

Janelle
