I headed out early this morning in search of a nice Snapp or two in the central/northern Bay area. My brother Glenn (Cervelo) played deckie for the day. A good run saw us at Spot X;D nice and early. We worked placies for a while but could not find a reasonable fish. We released a few around 35cm before heading over to see Brent, Tim & Jim on Aquarious. They were finding the going hard as well so we took of a little further North (I should have waited a bit longer as the boys scored well on the Snapps:) )
Not long after reaching Spot Y we had a nice feed of 3 Cod onboard. Two on Placies and one on live bait. I then decided to swim a new plastic I had just picked up from the US. Out went a 10" Strike King Rage Anaconda. It lasted about 5 minutes before the rod buckled over and the drag screamed:o . Glenn sorted the other rods out and started to chase as I tried to stay connected to what felt like a very big fish. It was well over 20 minutes before we saw colour and a huge Cod popped up:D .
He was totally exhaustd and blown up:-/ . We tried to revive him for about 30mins but the fight had taken too much out of him so we eventually checked his length (to make sure he was legal) and pulled him on board and emptied the 120L esky to fit him in
The fish went well over 110cm in length and on the bathroom scales went an impressive 22.9 kg which put him just over 50lb in the old money.
I would have been happier to see him swim away but he will not go to waste. We had some for dinner tonight and it was very nice;D .
By the way it had a jig head in its mouth. It was one I am not familiar with so whoever lost can probably ID it. I will post a pic in the morning but it has the lead sitting below the hook like an anvil (I might have the answer now)
