View Full Version : Fish ID - Caught while in Weipa fishing

Can someone ID this fish I caught fishing the shipping leads on a recent Weipa fishing trip. I think it may be a Frigate Mackerel but not sure. A Frigate Mackerek was what I come up with using Frank Prokop's Australian Fish guide book.

It may be a Finny Scad, Torpedo Scad.
They grow to a fair size, a bizzare fish that seems to made up of spare parts.

looks like it would have been pretty fun to catch. Did you get much up there? We will be in Weipa next week and wouldn't mind any tips on whats around and biting. Think the water may still be a little cold for Barra.

Pat,
I took my own boat so we had alot of freedom to move where I wanted to go. Fished Andoon Creek and right down the bottom of the Hey River System. We used live bait and HB lures with a Gold Bomber getting quite a touch up, tried other lures but the Gold Bomber produced the best results. We caught Queenies, Trevally, Threadies, Bream, Pike, Doggie Mackerel, Fingermark and few others. Some blokes in the caravan park fished the Mission River Bridge at night and done well for Blue Salmon.:D

We have a few Gold Bombers in the Tackle box so that will be great and we will have a couple of tenders to get around. Really looking forward to it and thanks for sharing your info!
