Hey fella's

Going with the family to Hamilton Island for a few days with Jetstar. Anyone know what the go is with transporting rods?

Thinking of whipping up a rod tub with some PVC so i can have a bit of fun landbased. Can only afford one charter, rest will be some land based action (tips welcome ;) )

anyone know what the go with transporting is? not possible with hand luggage, and extra bags are $20.

1. Would they be okay with me using a pvc pipe to transfer it?
2. Would a pvc pipe be enough?

I use a bit of 90mm pvc tube with a screw cap on one end and a glued on cap on the other. 2 meters is max but mine is just over and i don`t get any knock backs. and as long as all the luggage comes to a certain weight i don`t think you`ll get charged for extra baggage unless things have changed since my last trip on the plane. oct last year. Pistol Pete has fished hamilton land based so give him a PM as i`m sure he will be keen to help you out. Cheers Andrew

Fished there quite a few years ago and saw a bloke get maybe a 7kg trevally just off the pontoons in the harbour. I think he knew the owners of the fish and chip restaurant as that is where he was heading with the fish. I only had a baitcaster and a heavier hand reel (about 15 pound) and got smashed a few times. My gear was no match and they had me bricked in no time.

I took rods there on jetstar and over two days they got all the sections there.

Was a pain having to meet the next day flight to see if the lost section got there but it did. Putting every thing in a good tube thats well labelleled will help and should be fine.

Cheers

I think you'll find jetstar wont take anything over 1.7mtrs?? i had to send my rods back home via taxi last time, so it would pay to check...

I carry rods in pvc tubes fairly regularly, and have found it is much easier if you have a 2 piece rod. This keeps the tube quite small and compact and you never get knocked back. Long tubes do get knocked back occasionally

cheers

I'm travelling to NZ in October with Qantas and taking three rods with me. Same rules for surf boards apply to fishing rods. Maximum length is 2.77mtrs, anything over this must be paid for as air cargo. Just checked Jetstar & Virgin website and they don't mention anything about sporting equipment.

you can hire a dingy off the island big $$$ tho, if you head a little north of the new yacht club (reef runs along this bank) to near the end of the construction site, the reef goes to the west and forms a pretty big back eddy, i worked on the roof of the yacht club and saw heaps of bait skipping in this back eddy caused by the reef.....
id troll around there for a bit, everyone i saw went straight passed it....
