Looking for a nice 2-4 kg spin rod in the $150-$300 price range. The rod will be used on Sydney harbour and just offshore for squid jigging, tailor spinning, small rat kings, small snapper sp and flattie sp's.

Will be using a shimano fireblood reel. 2 piece would be preferable.

Dan,

I'm pleased with my Strudwick Sicstick although they do have a reputation of breaking at the tip (Touchwood mine doesn't!). These rods retail for around $100.00 and are a good buy when sold at lower prices.

Another rod you could look at is the Penn Pinpoint series, I haven't used these yet but they seem to be quite good - I haven't heard of any failures. These rods retail around the $150.00 mark but are well worth it.

If you want any more information you could try and use the search engine on Ausfish, you will be amazed what you will find.

Thanks Tom

I've got a sic stik pro and it's a good rod, it's done alot of work and still in one piece.

For the price I reckon you could get a custom built rod.

GUSA blank and tweaked to your specs.

Just a thought.

In the price range you have indicated.....there are literally hundreds of choices, most of them wont let you down. (I have been a pro rod builder earlier in my career...but arthritis in the fingers stops me doing it now) I wouldnt bother getting anything custom built, as it wont be much better than you can buy off the rack in this price range, and the quality of builds on rack rods these days is pretty good. I dont even bother building rods for myself these days, would rather spend the time fishing. If you want a good rod in the upper end of your price bracket have a look at the Gary Howard range built in the Samurai blanks, or if you are in Sydney...give John Cordin a ring at Campbelltown Fishing Scene, he used to make a couple of brilliant rods on Samurai blanks in your category and price range.

I rate the pfluger supreme in that price range...

Were 450 brand new when they first came out. Now they are around 260ish from the right retailer!

Unbeatable for the money!

Those Strudwick Nano rods look worth trying. Soft bodz and Hard baitz. I dunno if anyone has one that can comment. About $250. Tempted to get one myself but would have to break an existing one.

All my rods are Gary Howard and I buy them for one reason, big bang for buck quality!. From what I read at the start of the thread you are wanting to have a rod that can spin for Tailor as well as fish with SP's. Sounds like you need two rods. Gary Howard 9' Viper 4~8kg for spinning and a Gary Howard 7' Shikari 2~4kg for SP's.
Viper is approx $275, Shikari's range from high $200 to mid $400 but there is a tackle shop in Brisbane clearing their existing stock of Shikari's for half price.

my sic stik pro snapped during a cast & they wouldn't warrant it. Rod was well looked after & was not damaged. Something to keep in mind as I wouldn't touch another strudwick due to that experience. Tcurves are awesome rods for the price. innovator Nitro also make an awesome rod with a good warranty.

They are called snapwick's for a reason:) I have done two tips in the pro model and had a but section from the cork grip snap off as well???

I will say i have a 1-3kg struddie in a baitcast series and its awesome. The spin gear is shizen hausen.

rods break all the time due to various faults. What really pisses me off tho is when manufacturers won't stand behind their product. Lucky for me the guys I bought it off gave me a cash refund so I went & got a tcurve.

Sic Stik,,,,Snap Stik... load of BS. Mine has served well and has caught alot of good fish. Look after your gear and use it within it's intended limits !!!!

have a look at the new Lox Rods - exclusive to Complete Angler. Look very similar to the Nitro range. Have a $50 replacement fee for broken sections. fits into your $, around $240

must be me but i am not a big fan of the new tcurves, old ones were great, in a one piece.

my pic in that range would be a new raider and then you'd have alot of change (yes i rate them higher than a tcuvre and i know im gonna cop alot for this but i dont see a great deal of difference, only a slightly higher modulas graphite but alot of $$$ difference...) also i've looked at a few tcurves and the backbone has been way out, must be a mechanical problem at the factory... the tierra's with cork handles are good too but alot of places don't stock them (an online store has them for around 140 i think).

Also i'll repeat on the gary howard, great rod, good cork, also a winner in my book...

i would say a daiwa procaster z, but they dont seem to be making them anymore, i've had one for a few years and its been awesome, i paid $150ish for it im8 graphite, these days they fool ppl by saying hmg ( high modulus graphite) but no rating. but thats a whole other kettle of fish...

Don't forget the Starlo Stix Tournament light spin. It comes in at the lower end of your price bracket but punches well above its weight

There's a tackle store in sydney that is selling them for 100bux, have 3 left in stock at that price.
