G'Day Ausfishers
Went up to Donnybrook chasing flathead today. On the water right on dawn. Pretty chilly on the run up to the spot I fish that usually fires at this time of year.
Anchored in a narrow channel fishing the last couple of hours of the run out. Started firing the squidgy wriggler in red rum in all directions while soaking a strip of pike. First hour - nothing.
Lifted the pick and floated back on the current a little bit and re-anchored. Put the red rum to one side and picked up outfit #2 with pink jig head and one of those unloved, el cheapo wrigglers with pink hot tail, white body. Third cast, first crank and I'm on. I must have thrown it right into its mouth. A couple of runs and a big lizard comes to the surface and starts shaking its head with the plastic lip hooked. It had some weight and took 3 goes with the net to get it in. Note to self - get a better net.
Onto the ruler. Looks like 74.5cm. Adjusted the ruler a bit more and it went 76cm. Back in the drink and away she goes. A PB on SP and the wriggler is still in good shape as well.
Couple more casts. Connect to lizard 2. Smaller. Onto the ruler and it pulls up at 39cm. 1cm too long, now 1cm too short. Getting a bit worried that the esky is still empty.
Next cast. On again. This one has a bit more size. Couple of runs and goes 54cm on the ruler. Dropped the next one. Change the now battered wriggler to a newbie. Two more casts. 48cm lizard. Then a 43cm lizard. How easy is this?
Got one more undersize lizard right on dead low. The tide turned and they shut up shop. Went further up the passage and trolled up another undersize on a Lil Mate on the electric. Threw plastics for the rest of the morning along the dropoffs for nil return.
All up, not a bad session. Have attached photos of larger one. Taken on the phone camera so couldn't get it all in and quality a bit poor.
Cheers
Stephen
