I see Pfleugar and Shimano both offer 6:1 or higher retrieve ratios. I am wondering how the Pfleugars compare with the Symetres, Stradics or Sustains for usage and for corrosion protection?

The stradics and sustains in my experience and four of my mates are unbeatable. The pfleugar not so sure but I don't see as many of them around. Bit like buying a scoda car if you ask me. They have the specs right but you just don't know so you buy the toyota!

Mate read the tpoic, hereabouts on the snapper outfit....

My response then, and my answer now is stay as far away from pflueger reels as possible. The rods are great value, and i own half a dozen of them, but i unfortunately thought the reels might be of similar value...SHYTE...rubbish.

I bought a president...gears stripped after the 1st use...after catching undersize flathead???? Bought a supreme, was the thier top of the range, annodising had issues on the spool lip, gears corroded within months etc etc

^They are built for fresh water lakes in the US...not our harsh saltwater conditions here. Buy at your own peril:)

My pflueger medalist has been great so far and has lasted through some rather good soakings in the kayak and some days in the mud at the barra park where at the same time my Daiwa Exceler is having issues. After inititally being a bit ho-hum about buying a pflueger I'm actually very impressed with it.

I use Stradics and Sustains and I love them. I got my young bloke a Pflueger echelon last year for his bass. This reel rarely sees the salt and is cleaned. I've noticed quite a lot of corrosion on the reel body and it sure doesn't feel smooth anymore. I've replaced it with an old Sedona I had laying around. Much nicer reel.
I like Pfleuger rods....I recently got an Asaro spin stick which I use for bass (nice).
But the reels, no thanks.

I don't rate much of the Jap stuff for in the salt:P . The older white Stradics corrode very badly:( . I have a new one as well and it is already showing signs of corrosion:o . I look at reels like my 1974 ABU 5000C without a spot of external corrosion and wonder where we have gone wrong with the materials used in modern reels. Are we such a bunch of limp wristed weaklings that we have to sacrifice longevity for a slight weight reduction. My 17 year old Penn 850 has less corrosion than my 3 year old Stradic and I can tell you the Stradic has had a much easier life
