I'm looking at getting my first snapper spin set up.
Can people give me some options on what is good value for money and good quality equipment.
Price range is $200-$300.
Cheers, Jay ;D

The budget mentioned, is that for Rod only or Rod & Reel?
Would you consider an overhead setup or prefer spining reel?

Thats for both.
Would prefer spinning setup.

Reel - Shimano Sorroco, its $110~$115 and has a waterproof drag.
Rod - Gary Howard Phantom Series, come in 7', 8', 10' & 12' starting at $169
Should be able to get this as a package deal spooled with mono for approx $270

You'll get a good Penn 560 slammer combo for the sort of money you're talking about - you could use it for floating baits or SP's

For snapper I cant go past the Shimano Baitrunner in 4500 or 6500. They are tough and reliable and with thr baitrunner feature they are great for fishing with bait. The reel will set you back roughly $200 and for rod the shimano catana 701 snapper matches up good with it.
It should be under $300 I think. Goodluck with your purchase

Are you going to fish baits or plastics. Bay or offshore?

Plastics. is a 3-6kg rod big enough?

Inside the bay I use 2-4 kg rods for lighter work and progress up to my 4-7kg outfit
A good outfit under $300 would be something like a Starlo Stix Tournament Max Spin 4-7 kg with a 4000 sized reel like the Symetre. This will double as a spin rod for Macs and Tuna. Snapper are not great fighters and even an 80cm fish will fold fairly quickly even on 6lb braid

I was thinking Pflueger Trion 3-6kg spin with Pflueger illusion reel?
10lb microfse braid & what weight leader?

I agree with Horse if it is for inside the bay. I also use my bream gear for snapper, but that is only for the shallows around the bay islands.

Has anyone seen the Banax Si new? A guy behind the counter at a shop in Hoppers Crossing was telling me this reel is sweet. Duel speed worm drive oscillation stops braid burrying itself into the spool. Said it was excellent for targeting big fish on lite gear.
I'd go the penn slammer for that money... dont get a Pflueger there crap.

I have both the Pfluger and Starlo Styx Pro but both with Shimano reels (Twin power and Stradic), the Pfluger rod is great for the price but I wouldn't get a Pfluger reel...the Starlo Styx Pro is a great rod for the price, I would go the Shimano rod and reel....stretch $$ and go for the Stradic though.
10lb braid is a good choice (Fins) and team it up with 16lb flurocarbon trace (Not penn)
Some of the other sets mentioned above are too heavy for SP bay fishing IMHO....

I totally agree with Crunchy... If you are serious about flicking plastics and want your gear to perform to high levels, stay away from rods and reels that 'double' as bait fishing rigs???
Baitrunners, bait feeders, slammers, what ever you call em are not spinning reels meant for lure work. They do not lay line well enough for braid. Buy reels designed to be used with braid and meant to be used for lures. They are invariably lighter and smoother and built to to handle the pressures exerted using no-stretch braid.
Your price range should get you a decent enough set up. I would go for the best reel you can buy and go slightly cheaper on the rod, for now. A Pflueger Trion is fine...3-6kg is a great all rounder. Buy a stadic or Tierra as minimum. Good deals on the net now with a decent aussie $$$.
IMHO only buy a daiwa or shimano reel. Daylight to the rest when it come to lure fishing.

SHYTE...absolute rubbish. Made for fresh water and to be honest have a nickname here in NSW of 'asprin' - they disolve in water!
For the love of God...DON"T DO IT!!!!

Mate...It seems your after something i cannot recommend...Best of luck to you.
I quote myself from before "IMHO only buy a daiwa or shimano reel. Daylight to the rest when it come to lure fishing."
My opinion is based on thousands of dollars of mistakes. You can learn from it...or blow your dough.

Daiwa & Shimano make reels to cater for all budgets. Another idea is to check the classifieds as there are some awesome deals on excellent 2nd hand gear. I agree with kevvie, nothing but Daiwa & Shimano when it comes to quality spinning reels for lure fishing.
Keep your eye out for any of the old Daiwa hardbodyz range like the capricorn, theory & advantage, they are excellent reels for the price. Not to sure on the Shimano side of things but there are heaps of good cheap reels in their range. Should be able to pick something up for $100 or less.

Check out Cabelas mail order in the US. They sell a range of reels branded Prodigy. They are made by Diawa and apart from the spool seem to be a Tierra painted grey. They come on special regularly. the 2500 size is $59.99 US at the moment but last week the 4000 was $49.99 US
Don't discount other reels either. I have a Tica Camry 3000 that has gone many hard seasons and I have a Penn Affinity 4000 that has easily outlasted my Stradic

I have found a guy on ebay from the USA that sells all shimano reels that go for 35%-50% cheaper than AUS RRP.
