After seeing the price of sinkers at BCF ($8.95 for two 8oz droppers and $39.00 for 25 10 ball) I decided to make my own.

Over the past week I have made over 90kgs of sinkers 3,4,8,9,12oz droppers and 7,8,9 & 10 ball. This is enough to keep the boys on "Alexander" and my fishing buddies happy for the next 5 years.

The moulds were borrowed from two fellow Ausfish members who won't go short of sinkers for some time.

Apart from 35kg of sheet lead supplied by the "Alexander" crew I found a good supply of free lead from 5 dentists in my immediate area. The dentists are happy to get rid of the lead foils from dental xrays as they are not allowed to dump them. The average dental surgery usually has about 3 to 5kg of lead foil from 1 years worth of xrays. The thin foils of lead melt very quickly and don't have any impurities.

I made 7 phone calls to dental surgeries and obtained 30kg of lead foil.

All the dental surgeries in my neighbourhood are saving the lead for me for future cookups.

Yes I melted the lead outside wearing the proper mask and had fire proof gloves on both hands.

Attached is a pic of 5kg of dental lead foil.

Cheers

Well, fancy that!!

Just goes to show what you can do when you think outside the square. :D

Well done. This could start a run on all the dentists around the neighbourhood.

Smart thinking!! :)

You champion!!

I have just done up a small amount of reasonably clean lead and it was still putrid. Better than the lottery making them out of car tyre weights though, a very underwhelming experience. I will be right onto the local dentists before the rabble beat me to it.

Well done Barry,
Looks like really clean lead.
Champion effort.

Takes the effort out of going to the dentist now.

I never would have though about asking the dentist, I've got a bucket full of the car tyre weights to get through first!

Cheers, Mick.

Mick car weights are a pain in the rear end to use. You get heaps of crud aswell as all the steel clips in the molt. I find it alot easier to buy the sheet lead{cheep enough} and its alot quicker.

I agree Spiro
Its shit ; I'll never use them again. It stinks and you need more heat to melt the crap ; A lot of silver in it. THROW IT IN THE BIN !!!!

Cheers Graham
