I will have a week in New Zealand later this year, staying in the the Bay of Plenty area. It's supposed to be a great fishing destination and I was hoping to rent a little boat and do a bit of put-put in safe waters with the wife and youngster.
Looking at the maps it doesn't look too likely and all I can raise on the net is adverts for charter boat hire to deep water fishing.
I am hoping someone will have some experience of the area and can give me some ideas about what to expect.
regards

Hi Barry,
Can't give to much fishing advice around the Bay of Plenty, even though i grew up around there as a kid, and visit once a year, i normally fish up at Coromandel,(worth a visit and a fish) Hopefully i'll be over there later in the year to catch a few snapps and kingies. you could try this NZ fishing forum, http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/
The people on it are helpful.
Cheers,
Bryn

Thanks Bryn,
that's just the sort of help I needed, the locals will be the best to ask, I just couldn't seem to find the contact point.
I took a quick look and the 1st post I found about the place said .. dirty water....fishless desert .. drive straight past. This may not be the fishermans heaven I was hoping for :(
Not given up yet , where there's water there might be fish. I'll do a bit more with the forum and see what I can learn. Thanks again.
regards, Barry

There is some good fishing from time to time but not exactly a mecca. Better out wide a few clicks, too far wide for a small hire boat. Having said that in the harbour and just outside the entrance of he harbour (Tauranga harbour) its perfiectly reasonable to expect to get some pannies. PM me closer to the time....will see what I can find out.
