Hi all - thinking about making a new Bimini or hardtop for my Vagabond.
I would like to replace the existing structure with stainless steel. It will probably me a more flat across the top thing than the current curved small diameter alloy one because I dont want to have to get the stainless mandrel bent.
Is there much difference in structural strength and in particular rigidity (for holding onto the canopy when walking down the side walkway gunwales to the front and back) in one using the HD bolt around stainless fittings from Whitworths (eg) www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=137&item=14399&intAbsolutePage=2&LinkedItem=14373&search123=25mm
compared to having it professionally built with the whole thing tigged/migged up with big plates into the gunnels? The current alloy one is pretty bloody bendy but seems to do the trick, but grabbing onto it if the boat rocks while standing on the walkway would be pushing it! I am thinking that properly done the hinged joint frame out of stainless should be much stronger.
I also am in 2 minds about a Canvas top versus hard top...I dont need to mount anything inside or outside the top because its all on the dash or up front on the top of the cabin...I think I prefer the look of canvas too (and it should be a fair bit cheaper, even if replaced every 10-15 years), but any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Cheers
PS. I am pretty handy and am trying to keep the costs down...I can Tig with my Esseti 150 inverter tig but I am not a good out of position welder with it and it would add a whole heap of time to the job also compared to heavy duty brackets...Cheers
