Dogs onboard

Gday,
I'd be keen to take the young pup out to sea in the near future. He loves the water & loves the bumps whilst 4WDriving. I'd be picking the good days & stay relatively close just in case the weather turned sour. I'm not too worried about him doing a bog or a wizz onboard cas' the self-draining deck can simply be washed down with a hose. Though, I'm wondering if there is any legislation around having a dog onboard. Any thoughts & any experiences I should be aware of?

We too love to take our dog out, I bought a dog jacket only to find it was "just" too small for our adult German Shepherd, can have it for half purchase price if you are interested.

Never been used.

waterways nsw told me a dog counts as one person so consider that with how many you have on board

Do they make any larger ones? My shepherd is shy of 50kg now.

Also, we write the dogs name in texta in big letters on the top of the jacket, chances are he or she may have to be grabbed by a stranger and they will be scared of the dog and the dog will be scared of them.

Our mutt loves going out in the boat. Just turned year old today. I should have called it marley (like the movie) cause he is still a little bastard and still likes to eat everything. I normally take a few toys out on the boat for him to play with/chew on cause the pups do get bored. Even though he has toys he always manages to find something else on the boat to chew on.

I used to take out my female GSD....she was fun at 35kg and could curl up in corners well....now I have an addition - a male GSD from the same breeder and he is already 34kg at 6 months...so I doubt they will both go out with me!

PS. Mate - no legislation that I know of but you cannot land them in some areas such as south straddie - big fines.

I was surprised that there are dog life jackets. I'll have to order one. Anyone been out in lumpy seas with their dog? Or crossed a bar? I suppose taking them on the river is the best way. Although, over here in WA, there aren't too many rivers. It's all ocean where I fish.

I used to take my German shepard out all the time, she loved it. The only problem was when it was young, if it saw anything floating in the water it would leap straight over the side to catch it, even when on the plane!

Getting her back in the boat was always a drama with me having to join her in the water and lift her up.

She grew out of that habit though.

And rough water, never a drama.

We take our dogs on the boat nearly every time except when the grandchildren come along(to many little ones to watch at once).

Make sure you put a lifejacket on them and think of them like a toddler with regards to safety.

One of ours has gone overboard twice which ended up with dog overboard rescue by me lol.
