Baitrunner 6500

Hi all,
Have a 6500 baitrunner which I maintain as best I can. When connected to the last snapper it caught I noticed the drag to be quite sticky/jumpy. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to specifically make the drag smoother. Hope you guys can help.

Sounds like it's time to replace the drag washers.

Others will know if there's better than standard washers available.

If it has metal washers in it it may pay to give them a rub on some wet and dry very fine sandpaper. Put the paper on a flat surface like glass toss some water on and rub in circular motion, this should take care of any high spots on your washers.

Nothing worse than a grabby drag.

I had the same probs with a 3500 br.

easy answer is to wash the drag washers in Shellite.

If that doesnt fix it, then get drag upgrade from Shimano thru your local Tackleworld, or try Jack Erskine on the net.

Is it a 6500 B, A or Plus model? They have different size washers.

dunno whether you need to replace the washers. Have you ever taken the drag apart and given it a clean and regrease? You might have gotten some water in there.

my daiwa millionairre had a lumpy drag and daiwa replaced it for me

you should give it ago
remember to back off your drag when storing your reel this can cause some probs

I'm with the Gecko and Jeremy,I wouldn't be trashing the existing washers untill I was certain a clean wont fix the problem.As stated above give them a wash/soak in shellite,clean the drag housing inside the spool and re assemble with some drag grease or a drop or two of machine oil on the felt washers.If you get confused on the order while re assembling just make sure the top drag plate locks onto the shaft and not into the spool,then alternate the drag plates till you get to the bottom.

I will give them one big clean up, and then replace if the problem isn't fixed. Should I soak both the metal and felt washers in shellite. And, where abouts do I apply the drag grease, in between the washers, or where?

You can clean both the metal and fible washers. Even better is to 'lap' the metal washers until flat with some 600 grit wet and dry paper on a sheet of glass. Dry the washers with some paper towel and make sure all the solvent is gone before applying some quality drag lube (Cals reel grease) - a little smear between the washers.
