G'day all,

today I was having a chat with a Caribeean coleague about crabs. He was in disbeleif when I discribed the size of the Aussie mudcrab shell and nippers(we have all seen the ones mounted in pubs around the country). I mentioned one could probably take off ya little finger if you were unlucky enough to get caught.

So i thought I would put it out there for your stories of mud crab injuries any photo's would be great too.

Cheers

In the kitchen cooking muddies after a trip in tinny creek, years ago.

Got 5 from memory. Anyway, one got out and was running round the kitchen. Kids were young, they thought it was funny............. The bloody muddy got me on the left thumb.

Well you ever seen a grown man squeal like a girlie, I was running round the house yelling...get it off.....get it off.................. wife says what do i do......2 young kids rolling round laughing their guts out "look at daddy...hahahahaha they thought it was real humorous.

Anyway I yells at the wife, theres a hammer in the kitchen drawer (what was I thinking) .

I try to hold my hand on the kitchen floor, which is hard when theres a f****** muddy hanging off ya thumb. Anyway, hand on floor, and wife starts swinging the hammer, trying to get the crab tolet go. Man, it was bloody hilarious, me screaming dont hit my hand, screaming in pain that the crab was gonna cut me thumb off......................... the kids rolling round with tears in their eyes laughing their guts out at daddy's unfortunate predicament. Anyway, wife finally hits the crab, who drops off my thumb........... MINUS its bloody big claw, which is still attached to MY thumb. It was then that i learnt that a crabs claw when it departs from the crab, does not actually let go of your thumb, it stays hard and tight round your thumb. Kids getting sore tummies form laughing so hard and so long.

Anyway, we finally get the claw off after using a screw driver to force it open.

Now when i get the odd crab, the kids, all grown up by now ( after that nights mirth from them, they are luccky they grew up LOL) they yell out............................. "run for the hills, dads bought crabs home to cook...run forrest run.........." Cheeky shits.

I hate Mud Crabs

Thats bloody hilarious Mike, you'll never live that one down. The worst part about being in so much pain is that people are laughing at you which makes it so much worse! But ya cant stop to kick thier arse because you have your mind on other things :(

Keep em coming boys!

G'day

This is one of my big ones, and the biggest injury?? None for me, but a crab with a hangover sounds pretty injured to me from its point of view.

My Father used to go crabbing in the good old days in the seventies at donnybrook they used to put a few leaves in a sugar sack to seperate the crabs my father was carring the sack over his shoulder and a couple of crabs got there claws through the sack and latched onto his back the only way he could get it to release was lay on his back with the sack under him till they let go, another time we had a dozen or so muddies tied up in the old style concrete laundry tubs overnight, went down next morning and there were no crabs, we lived about 400mt from the water and found them just before they went accross the main rd to the water the buggers had headed back down the street

had almost the exact same thing as Mike had happen, but it was my mate, we had two good muddies, and he was teasing one with a stick to see how hard it would crunch the stick, it snapped it in half so he tried to retrieve the broken bit, but the crab grabbed his thumb, as he waved it about, it threw the nipper and started to really apply the pressure, he was on his knees weeping like a baby as he tried to bang it on something to get it off, I suggested we head to the garage and crush it in the vice, luckily we broke off the hinged nipper bit and he was free, got 5 stiches in the wound, and we still laugh about today (he doesn't)

These are great gents keep em coming! Can we find a severed finger or toe in the search for the best injury or is it just an old wives tale that they are that strong?

I had a very close call with a Blue Swimmer (sandie) once, we were using those two ring lift nets, and I just went to tip one in the esky, but it slipped out, nipped my shorts right near the "marble bag" another half inch or so and I reckon it would be fixing the hubble telescope I would have jumped that high!

Had a mate that did a bit of guided fishing on the roper river a few years ago and he told me a story about a new chum vietnamese pro crabber.
the crabber got grabbed on the thumb and tried to get it off with his teeth but the other nipper got him on the ear, reckons he looked like one of them old time phone operators, his missus tried to bash it with the back of a tommy hawk and clocked him as well, the blood curldling scream was heard miles up the river.lol

Hi guy's
back in the seventies when i was a lad from memory i was about 15-16 yrs old my mates and i use to go fishing around Bayview - Church Point in Sydney where we grow up.

we used to walk through the mud flats to get to one of our great little fishing holes. This day i will never forget as this mate of mine an i growup together from toddlers and his father was with us as well as usual, well walking through the flats and suddenly my mate lets out this all mighty horrible scream.

you guessed it a bloody big muddie latched onto his big toe i'm wondering what he was screaming about his old man was racing across to help out with me in toe mates in pain and the agony is written all over his face.

we get to him his dad is reaching down into the mud to free his foot next thing you know the old man his being out this bloody big muddie hanging off my mates big toe next thing you know the muddies on the flats with toe still in claw minus the foot mates in in pain , i'm ripping off shirt to rap around foot, his father is picking up muddie to place in bucket with toe still in claw and off to Monavale hospital we go stop along way to place toe and muddie in ice.

We get to the hospital and mate straight in doctors pissing themselves laughing does not help that the doctors was his older brother neverless they could not save the toe to badly mangled.

The next went down to see my mate and he is mum, dad, pissing themselves lauging mate is really Sh*ttie mood way well dad took that muddie home good the damn thing an ate it mate was really p*ssed off that they did not save any for him after to all he losted the toe.

To today we still laugh about this and his is still p*issed off at dad not saving him any crab

Cheers

well me crabing the way i do i get alot of bites worst for me was harving to tendons in the top of my hand pulled out and the middle finger snapped by the other claw, i didnt crab after that for a few months mind you it took 2 months for everything to heal back properly, ive had heaps of broken fingers, toes broken when ive slipped tying them up, over at moreton carrying 15 crabs back from the sandhills in a shade cloth bag i ran out of string and got one of the crabs i didnt tie ups claw come threw and get my back had to ly down to wait for him to let go, lacerations hurt, crushed nails, tearing of the webed skin in between your fingers thats a by ouch, i agree accidently standing on them def hurts, though the worst ive ever seen was when my dad was teaching me to catch muddies with my hands he stuck his hand down the whole and wam 2 craws right across the nuckes the crushing claw went straight through his palm and the cutting claw lacerated all his nuckles i had to use a pair of plyers to smash the claws as he was resting his hand on a tree, dont you love when they drop there claws and they just tighten harder and harder, hes never crabbed by hand again, he leaves that up to me know ::)

They are good fishos as well, unlike the old man. This pic has been up before but it is a good one.

Seriously, the most times I have been bitten is from crabs that are tied up. Mishandling, and allowing a long finger tip to slide into the wrong spot was the problem; fixed now.
When a crab bites you and ejects its claw, the muscle contracts and the closed claw sticks fast to your body. The trick is the grab a rock, pliers, knife, or whatever you can find and crack the shell. Once you crack/smash the shell, the muscle relaxes, and you are free to carry on. Don't worry about trying to lever it open, smash it, use your spare hand if you have to.
Cheers,
Johnny

I was going to keep quiet but have had some prompting to put this up.

10 years ago fishing in Maroochy river in a hire boat with a mate we caught a few muddies, and in the process of tipping them out of the pot they've ended up in the bottom of the boat.

So in my infinite wisdom I picked up the knife by the sheath end to direct the crab into a bucket..... Well as the crab latched on to the knife I went to pull it away and look out I've pulled the sheath off and armed the bugger!!!

Little bit of panic now, "don't worry I'll get him", jumping around the tinny, "oh shit I've been slashed", my mate thought it was pretty funny now that I had got in a knife fight with a crab and lost.

So my mate sorted out the crab while I wrapped up my wound with pieces of tee shirt. It was quite embarrasing explaining to the boat hire mob why there was blood all over me and my shirt ripped apart while going to get our deposit back.

Hope you all get a laugh cause I have to here about it every time I go near a crab now!

A good mate of mine and i got onto a few muddies, and we went back to his place and cleaned the boat and had several beers, then his kids come home so he lets the crabs out on the driveway, they started to make a run for it, so i was trying to pin one to the ground with a broom so i could safely pick it up, my mate Terry says just grab it don't be a pussy! So he comes over and tries to grab it and it latches on to his finger, he let out a scream as he ripped his hand away, lucky for him it only just got him and the crab flew through the air into the garage door. His mrs, myself and his 3 kids all gave it to him.
