Caught this of the rocks at south ngala rocks on fraser using a worm for bait.It looks like a grunter with fat lips and makeup on its cheeks;D.
it was about 30cm long,we didnt actually measure it,just took some pics and let it go.
It put up a good fight on light line.

its a painted morwong mate one of the better eating of the family nice fish ;D

yep close relation to the slatey, these are the fish that you often see in ads for the GBR, the yellow and black mottled ones

That is what I caught and was asking about an ID for. Execpt mine was 50 cm :P ;D

It is actually known as a "Blackfin Slatey" from the sweetlip family. Here is the link:-

Glad ya let it go Craig. Too many people catch and kill fish they cant identify, some even try eating them without knowing what they are. Now ya know for sure and can do what you will with the next one.

They are good eating if you steam them. If you cook them to death they are poor. But cooked correctly beautiful........
