Does anyone use or have used the Banax GT Spin reels or the Angler Overhead Jig reels?

If so, what sort of drag pressures are you getting for both reels?

They are advertised in Bush and beach magazine and Budd's bait and tackle are selling them for $169 for the spin and $119 for the Overhead Jig (apparently normally retialing for $399)

At that price, just how good could they be?

In my case they would be used in Cooktown to chase Spanish macks and bottom bashing in water less then 30 meters deep.

Cheers,

Nick

G'day Nick,

My young fella brought a sx5000 banax a few years agao now, its been a good reel, the drags are oil impregated felt discs a bit antiquated but they work well with regular maintenance. Not sure about the GT spin, but I'm sure you could get carbontec replacements from Jack Esrkin, he seems to make carbon tec replacements for just about everything else.

Thye are a very robust reel, machined brass main gear and strong alloy spool, reasonable retrieve ratio and good spare parts back up - I replaced a handle recently, my local tackle shop was able to get one very quickly and iot was replaced at no cost - the reel was well out side of warranty, like about nine years so I was pretty impressed. the sx5000 would do the job you are talking about nicely.

could be worth looking at

Cheers

Thanks Rhys,
At 169 bucks they are worth a crack I think.

Have a couple of Banax spinners, good reels for the price, personally I'd prefer them over an Okuma anyday.
As Rhys said, the SX reels are excellent IMHO.
Cheers.

Banax are a very underrated reel. The importers have been in the game for many years (though have undergone a few name changes) but they are a reputable company who pride themselves in their backup and spare parts availability. They are not 'top shelf' but are 'honest tradesman' quality. I doubt they would let you down unless you try to exceed their specs. (this statement also applies to many 'brand' reels in a similar price range).

Cheers

Hi Greg,
What drag pressures would they be capable of (GT Spin 5000) I can not find any specs on their site?

G'day mate!

Here is an honest opinion.

I own a Banax sx300 and an iso 3000.

My mate has an sx 3000 and sx 5000.

The sx reels are good value for the money and will still work after some serious mistreatment. (My mate went fishing off a gutter at Sharpe's near Ballina. His daughter, who he was looking after, fell in! He jumped in with rod and reel to rescue her. Forgot to rinse out the reel or do service. Still working 2 weeks later.)

In saying that they are a little rough. I'm not an Alan Hawke but the gears have not been cut that closely. With a basic service and oil they are ok. Drag sound but don't let anything run too far! Will last Donkey's Years if you can do your own service.

I like my iso3000 a lot!
Beter Sealing/Gears and Drag. Nice tailor spinning reel. Used it on my tailor expedition off the point this weekend. Biggest fish 2.2 kg but the drag was nice and could be adjusted. A much nicer reel than the sx. Communist China versus Taiwan?

Don't know how an iso would go on jigging but the bigger size iso or gt might be better value than the sx.

Regards, Rob.

Cheers mate,
I just got an email from the Banax rep and he states that the GT5000 has a max drag pressure of 13 kgs.

Does that sound right?

Yup.

Some reports on the GT if you put Banax into Google.

Hi Nick,

I have 2 Banax SX reels 5000 & 2000, 1 SI3000, 1 GT 4000, 1 Banax SInew and a Banax Tracker. I plan to get a SI DBX 7000 for heavy jigging.
The reels have performed flawlessly on ever occasion. Great Reel ! A little while ago they featured on "Fishing Western Australia" and were given a good wrap by the boys when fishing for Amberjacks.

You may wish to google KnK fishing to get an idea of prices.
