I noticed on the DPI website that as from 1 July 2009 there will be a limit of 1 shark (under the category of "All Sharks" allowed to be taken up to 1.5m Max.

What is the current limit on bronze or small sharks pre-1st July 2009??

G'day

I wasn't aware of either a size or bag limit previous.

I believe it was as big as you dare to take on.

Ok fair enough. I caught a few the other week around the 70cm mark...

Looks like this new limit of 1 will be a bit of a party killer!

Seems a strange fish to put a limit on, are there really that many rec fishoes taking these fellas home? Most blokes I know who target them are looking for sport.

Well I don't eat them but my uncle who comes fishing with me often doesn't mind a bit of flake for dinner ;-)

If I knew how to handle them post capture (what to remove and when), I'd take some home for the missus, as she absolutely loves flake but hates any other form of seafood. I know, she has no taste, she's married to me.

Hi Mate - If you bleed them (I take head + tail off) immediately, then soak fillets in lemon juice for 5 odd minutes(Helps get rid of any residual ammonia) they come up alright.

Battered+Fried is my preference.

Hey mate,
For the missues,

Bleed them by cutting the throat, then straight away after you have bled them out, fillet and skin the shark. Place in a clip lock sanga bag, then put the fillets on ice.

Best eaten fresh so only take a little bloke under 70 cms ect.

They have quite a lot of flesh on them for their size so I small fish with supply you with a few feeds.

Not as good as Southern Gummy Shark ect but def palateable.

Cheers,

Nick

I believe all sharks and rays have a no limits pre July rule...None of the whalers are protected. No bronzies up this far, you're probably catching similar whalers...pigeye, spinner, sharpnose, bully, dusky. Either way remember it's only one per angler under 150cm, and none over that length after start of July.

I'd always been told with flake to freeze it. Apparently after it has been in the freezer for a couple of weeks, the urea taste will have decreased.

Be interesting for someone to do an experiment. Eat one fillet fresh, and eat the other in a few weeks time.

It doesn't really matter what the limit for BRONZE whaler sharks in in qld as it's HIGHLY unlikely that you'll ever catch one!!!!!!;) Bronzies are a COLD WATER SPECIES and there northern limit is around Coffs Harbour although there is the occasional one turn up in se QLD water in the cooler months July/ august!

Ian

Ps. before anyone jumps down my throat and says they have caught heaps of bronzies in qld ,read the below link!

Hmm ok maybe not a bronzie then. Looking at the DPI shark ID page, it most closely resembles a Milk shark or hardnose shark... None of the others have the same teeth shape or nose shape and fin marks etc.

On the shark boats we would take the tail off and let them bleed out before taking the fillets of and skinning them sometimes you end up with a blood line down the fillet but if you take that off they loose most of the tast. The blood line is only on the skin side of the fillet and is only thin so take it off the same as the skin. The skin on the shark will bluntan your knifes real quick so would suggest filleting other fish first
