gday all,
couldn't resist going for another quick flick at the same spot as friday nite so went again on sat nite. as my cousin owen (rockfisho) was keen as on getting a decent thready, got there round 4.30. big prawns were a bit scarce so used ones caught the previous night. plenty of catty/pike eel action the whole time so we hung around a bit later than normal. the prawns started coming in around 6.30. got some good size liveys out. out goes my bream stick with 3kg fireline. put it in the rod bucket on freespool. and about 7 it gets a solid but slow hit. i hooked it and this 'thing' proceded to cruise towards me plenty of weight but no runs occasion headthump. felt just like a pike eel until it came to the surface about 5 metres away, lifting half of its golden body out of the water it preceded to do wat threadys usually do. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. while im fighting this fish the barra stick goes off owen grabs it and hooks up to something with alot of weight acting similarly to mine did at the start of the fight. the double hookup was short lived as owen's spat the hook. followed by an extended length of swearing for the 5 ,inutes.
after a good long fight with some big zzzzzzz. i got mine to my feet, owen tailed him and we got him up. stoked as!!! he was as long as the last one but stil solid and nice a fat. hook was right down in his gut. fight was to long on light gear. he didnt swim. now i love a feed of fish. most reefies and havn't kept a thready from the river so thought id give it a try. nice clean meat so it should be good.
he went 80cm and 8lb on the scales. and got some pics when i got home as the camera i took(this time) had a dead battery.

cheers,
bballfisho

Awesome fish mate. Hard luck to Owen, a double hookup in the river would have been a great sight to see. You certainly seem to have therm nailed.

Cheers

Well done mate another nice fish. Been talking to a few mates about sizes of fish being taken from different areas of the river. Don't want to know your location but out of interest was that fish taken not far from the city? Lucky buggers to have fish like this in our river. Fantastic

Top fish mate. Shame to miss the possible double but nice work none the less! They're not bad eating at all. We got one a little while back which died at our feet. Went about 97cm and 8-10kg. They go like bloody freight trains!!
Top work again mate and great report. Keep em' coming! :) 8-)

Cheers

thanks guys for all the comments. just had him for dinner (first one ive personally kept). tasted good but wasnt as firm as i hoped. but stil was nice, but i may be a bit spoilt because i eat most reds, parrot, pearlies etc lol.
yeh cheif area i fish is a few ks upstream from the city stretch. we've caught about 10 or so threadys sub 60cm in that stretch. and the biggest was around 1 m. definately some sizable ones around there but nothing like the one in ur avatar (masssssive fish). although i have been spooled on 6kg previously. so there may be a few XOS ones around.

owen is stil spewing at his loss lol. double hook-up both landed would have been truly special.

thanks for all the comments guys

Cheers mate didn't want to put you on the spot. when your talking size averages it seems farther up the river is the nursery areas as as you move to the mouth the size average increases. Would love to know how old a 60 cm threadie is. Thanks mate your info has been much appreciated

Well done mate, Great fish. I got another one on friday night went 75cm. If you want to put them back I found that if you pierce thier belly with a small knife etc, you hear the air releasing from its belly- they are fine after that and swim off to fight another day. Well done. My fish was 2.5kg- the one I caught that went 91cm was 5kg - I wonder if they double in weight every 20cm??

Mate,

Usually around 1-2 years at that size around Brisbane. Interestingly they are around 2-4 years old at that size in WA, so they seem to be growing a bit quicker down here
