I want to put braid on my Daiwa Saltist and was wondering what lb people would suggest to go upto? I mainly only want it for bottom bashing and jigging. I've got my eyes set on the Daiwa Tournament Accu-Depth ;) . Currently I'm only running 40lb mono and don't think there is very much on the spool (more than likely not enough for the reefs around 100m). Any suggestions would be much appreciated :D
Cheers

Hi Paul,
If you are using mono, 40lb isnt bad... But if you are using braid (I think braid is better for the job) You have a choice...
With braid you can get away with going heavier because it is thinner than the same weight mono, and wont be affected asmuch with current ect.
I would say if you are going for bigger fish, and in 50-100m, then 40-50lb braid would be great... but if it was me, I would look for alittle fun and have a spare reel (cheaper spinning reel?) with 30lb braid on it. But thats just me.

I have the Saltist LW50HA and I'm running 80lb Braid (300m) and about 100m of backing. This was only loaded up last week........I'm guessing you wouldn't have too much issue going 50lb Braid?

ive got a saltist 40 and running varivas pe6 big one, it braking is around 85 lb
youll easily fit 300m of the stuff on a 30
the pe rating is on thickness so if you get a good pe6 braid it will still be the stregth of other 80ld just thinner
and have a spare spool with 30lb braid on it. But thats just me.

50 lb Jigman or 50lb Varivas will do the job.

Whats with the smileys GBC?
I am the guy on the boat that fishes with the lightest possible tackle to have the most fun (lighter gets more bites and normaly loses afew more fish...)
I dont live in QLD, im a Victorian, but we have depths down here too and thats what I would use... spool 1 reel with 50lb and have 1 reel with 30-35lb.
80lb is fine if you want to skulldrag. :P

(spare spool on an overhead?)
Fill it up with 50lb minimum. Its a godsend when bottom bashing and you hook up to a solid cod, shark or good sized pelagic. Also easier to tie knots in low light with.

Just letting you know you can get spare spools for overheads... Atleast I can for most of my Shimanos and Abus, hunt for them out of japan.
And sorry, it was a mistake, posting in afew threads and thinking about alot of stuff, I was trying to type SPARE REEL (normaly spinning) with 30lb. Post is fixed now.

We were up at 1770 on the wkd. Had some unstoppables destroy us. With the drag as tight as i could go with my line class they were peeling line off like i had it in free spool lol. After about 30 sec or so of it's blistering run he bricked me on 80lb leader (leader had abrasion damage up the first meter or two). This is why i want 60-80lb braid :)
Also i have a stradic with 20lb braid on it that i use for plastics and light ockta jigs.

Whatever you think best mate, as I said I live in Victoria so im just going on what I see down here.
Thats where I was going with having a second spinning reel, good for abit of flicking around or light work on the way home ect.

I'd say anything from a good 50-80lb or PE4-6 braid. The PE braids have a thinner dia. for their given BS and are almost always of the highest quality which is what you would be looking for am I right? :)

I thought PE-4 was 40lb and PE-5 was 50lb etc etc? Is this correct?
Is there a better braid out there for the same money as the Daiwa Accudepth or is that a pretty good choice?
Cheers

Sharkie, that's the basic rule of thumb but the PE actually only refers to a diameter which is why some better braids could be pe5 and actually be rated to 80lb.
