View Full Version : Can a plunger pull out dents?

My 2nd hand tinny came with a few minor dints. Nothing serious (i.e. no holes) but obvious none the less. The couple of dents are above the chine so the problem is really a matter of aesthetics rather than deminished performance.

I wasn't too sure if it would be easy to fix but a quick search of the web found a few comments about using a plumber's plunger to pull the dent out?

Has anyone tried this?

If it doesn't work, what's the alternative?

Cheers in advance

No it will not work, a broad expanse of wood and a hammer will work.

The trick is to take it awfully slow and ensure you don't target any small area with much force as it will again stretch another dint of aluminium within the already stretched aluminium dint.

Thanks FNQCains but from what I can see I'm unable to pop out the dents from behind.

I was really hoping this would be a quick and easy solved problem....

Yeah they are a hard case, the dint it's self is now stronger than the flat metal around it. All of the margin is stretched, you need to approach it from the viewpoint that it need to be shrunk back to flat again little by little releasing tension as you go.

honest it's hard but do-able depending if there are no crease lines etc.

Mate good luck, there is every chance you will get it to a stage better than now anyway, start with the easiest ones for practice.

IMO the more you work it the weaker it will become.
So unless its restricting the performance i say leave them be.
As the saying goes if its not broke dont fix it.

Have you got photos?

Got any stickers you like?

Get some filler in the ding, and whack a sticker on top if it bugs you.

Try the car paintless dent removal trick - apply an electronics freezing agent (available from Dick Smiths) and then hit it with a hair dryer - shrinkage/tension created pulls the dent out - not sure on an ally boat though ?

Have a look on YouTube - heaps of demo's under paintless dent removal

Cheers
