hey guys .i'm in a real bind here. i'm in melbourne and will be in cairns in 2 days. I've spent all day driving around trying to get a 15kg-24kg rod to fish princess charlotte bay with. What i need to know is do the tackle shops in cairns stock a good range of rods t suit where we are going? I picked up a saltiga reel so that side is covered, but i don't want to get up there and find that i should have bought the rod down here. i've never fished the reef before so i really like any and everyones opinion on what type of rod i should get (is the 24kg to much) lenght restriction is 6'6" . i'll be using the rod for trawling and bottom bouncing and possibly throwing lures

hook thanks. how are they for price and size?
Yep Erskines or Bransfords would be the go. Good range and competitive in pricing. There is a B C F in Cairns also if you are really stuck.

I got smoked just a couple of days ago using 80lb line and a 37kg T curve, I was slow on the strike so I suspect the hook got swallowed and the mono exited the mouth, I was winning for 5 seconds then he smoked me for the next 30 till the line cut through, was sort of glad!
I wouldn't consider casting with my bottom fishing rods.
IMO you need 2 rods as basic minimum, something say 24kg for everyday bottom and trolling and lighter and longer for casting.
I try and shop at Tackle world whenever possible because they put their time and money where their mouth was to protect recfisherman from unfair regulations, against all odds.

IMO Branfords is the best tackle store in the Cairns area with Tackle World on Aumuller in at second.......Without bagging it with toooooo much detail a certain store near the Barron River I will never ever go back to. They well and truely lost me as a customer.............And I like to give them all a fair go....

daz i got the dogfight and the rod to match is $600 and the 15kg-24kg in the t-curve is $380 .the buget is starting to get stretched. the wife found out we were going to cairns and hit the roof so i've had to bring her and the kids along as well which put another $4000 cost onto the trip with air fares accomodation and stuff.
FNQ what the hell busted you up and i hope we get a look in at that kind of action

G'day Will, you have a damn nice reel, talk to Peter and tell him Wahoo sent you in, the Saltiga rod will hopefully cost less than $600, Me, and this is me only, i could not put a dogfight on a Shimano rod, not knocking the t-curve at all, great gear also
good luck with it al,l and enjoy you stay up this way, hope you nail a few

Will i dunno what it was, this spot we visit mainly for the fun of it and the sore backs as it's not rich in fish with red on them, still every now and then quality eating fish make it up. i mentioned it to highlight that at times up here heavy is not heavy enough and trying to cover all the bases with one rig is a real PITA.
Can you get away with 2 rigs? 3 would be minimum though, each already setup for it's purpose. Some of the lower cost rods punch way past their price.
What are you open to? and what LB line are you using and how much of each type of fishing are you going to be doing?
cheers fnq

thanks daz ,FNQ yeah the whole problem is trying to get the setups right. all i can say it i'm glad i got onto this forum;D for my barra setup i'm running a abu 5600 overhead with a 8kg rod. 30lb braid 60lb leader .With the dogfight thats 80lb braid and 100lb black magic leader. for the heavier stuff one of the blokes is making up short traces. like you said on any given day even this setup is going to be tested( i'm damn well hoping). I've even thrown in the wifes rex hunt special combo that i bought her years ago and have tried to bust it quite a few times and it wont break unless i do something really stupid, so yeah it punches well above its weight so the go might be to get a cheaper rod for jiging and bottom bouncing. any way this is my last post for a fortnight coz i'll be in cairns in the morning and i've got a wedding in an hour ,SO THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP ,and hopefully i'll post some pics when i get back cheers will (we're on the barra for 3 days, reef for 3 as well )
