Does anyone know about a permit for taking undersized fish to keep in a salt water aquarium. Have heard you can get one for 2 fish at a time with certain restrictions. DPI said to ring EPA. EPA said to ring DPI. :o

never heard of that, but I am sure there is probably some sort of "license" to gather Aquarium Fish, but it would seem to be more a DPI thing than an EPA I reckon.

there is no such thing that just anyone can get, special permits can be gathered if its for aquaculture perposes or study but an assesment has to be made by DPI first, some species of fish which you may see sold which have got size limits on them are either aquacultured, sold off ex study fish by DPI or are collected in international waters, shops wont buy or sell fish unless there is a legit paper trail to origins of fish, if you wish to collect unregulated species thats fine aslong as you use legal equiptment, stick to bag limits and collect in legal areas

justjack: It makes me wonder where that leaves the average punter who has bought and is keeping 'under size' fish from the pet shop. The pet shops may very well cover them selves by having a paper trail but the average person who buys such fish would still be 'in possession' of an under size fish. They are not likely to have any sort of receipt either, so I suspect it would be rather difficult especially one or two years on from the purchase for them to prove they bought it from a pet shop. I guess common sense should prevail, but you just never know. :-/.

yeah i understand that, i work in the aquarium industry and i like to tell people to hang on to there receipts but most the time it comes down to common sense, what sort of fish where you looking at keeping?
