proper fill sozed niko marker and decent sized black cable ties...I put mine inside.
one thing I did think about was recycled plastic filing dividers.

I wonder about whether crabs can pick up electricity generated by different metals in salt water........... probably not?

Old CDs or DVDs. They already have a hole in them for a cable tie.
There was a time when one used to get a lot of promotional CDs and DVDs in the mail advertising things like internet suppliers. Likewise, if you work in an office, there are usually lots around with old unwanted data on them.
.
Oldboot, what are the off the shelf ones made from?Who has them?

Thin polly board and use either dremel with a bur on it to engrave details or I have also done it with the tip of the soldering iron. Inside the pot and crimped stainless leader so it can't be removed real fast. Have also taken to using some coloured net repair thread on pots from new so I can identify mine at a distance at a ramp so even if label is removed. If I catch someone with one I'll be able to identify it and will want an explaination and not a BS one and police to reclaim at a minimum.
More info, when you use an old pen to maek the aluminium, place the aluminium on a newspaper,so it beds in deeper. Its permanent.

tin snips and a coke can to make ally tabs but they can still have sharp edges and cut. Old phillips head screw driver ( tip rounded smooth) on newspaper on a piece of leather. They do corrode and go dull but always should be readable.
Any one tried with some 1mm stainless sheet or just used letter and number stamps with a hammer on thicker metal. Aleast it would be there forever?

I've been writing my details on all the PVC support tubes on my round pots
Note that page 30 of the rec rules does not state that both the float and the pot have to be marked. Nor does the web site.
From page 30
"Crab pots and dillies must be marked by an identifying tag bearing the surname and address of the owner." end quote

To update this post, the quote following is from page 18 of the Recreational fishing rules for Queensland current as of 1st February 2012. "Crab pots and dillies must be marked by an identifying tag bearing the surname and address of the owner.
In addition, the pot or dilly must be attached by a rope to either:
• a float that is at least 15 cm in all its dimensions and marked with the owner’s surname, or"

Here it does say so
http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/rules-regulations/crabs-and-lobsters
Crab pots and dillies
In tidal waters, when fishing for blue swimmer crabs, mud crabs and spanner crabs, no more than four crab pots or dillies (or a combination of pots and dillies) may be used per person. Also a person must not possess more than four crab apparatus per person, on a boat on the water.
Crab pots and dillies must be marked by an identifying tag bearing the surname and address of the owner.
When not attached to a fixed object (for example tied to a tree above the high water mark), all crab apparatus must have a light coloured surface float attached. The float must not be less than 15 cm in any dimension and must be marked clearly with the owner's name.

For my redclaw pots i have made aluminium tags that have been engraved with my details.
This way i don't have to worry about the writing fading.

You can also cut your dodgy or rubbish CD and DVD into Traingle shape, drill two holes and to place small zip ties , Put your details on with permanent waterproof texture.
Works good but does fade after a few soaks, at least its one use for them instead of the bin.
