a public meeting will be held in cairns on the 29th april to discuss the Coral sea heritage park final submission.This :SUBMISSON:proposes to close the coral sea to ALL FISHING. nope its deadset true, I have a copy of the submission and have read it thouroughly. Basucally the precautionary principle all over again, they know fishing pressure is stuff all, but it should be closed "just in case"

I'm not certain whether I can attend or not yet, being the last week of the month, its our busiest time at work, so I might not be able to get time off to make my way to airns for a couple of days, if i can't get there I am willing and able to help in any other way if required.

With the meeting in cairns I wont be able to attend and I am guessing a lot of people will be the same.Why have a meeting of such significance so far away in a town with a relatively small population? Then they will tell us there was adequate consultation and we all had our chance to speak up.

For the uneducated, where is the proposed Coral Sea park thingy? Also, how do we stop these so and so's from getting away with this. Can we start a poll on here that could serve as a petition to send to a local member in support of the recreational fishermen of the region?? There has to be some way to stop these politicians........ if not, I think we need to have a red hot go trying!!>:(

It's not in my back yard and I don't know the area really at all...but I do know this,we being the anglers of Australia need to really get our shit together and get very very big (which we already are,just not combined/organised).As a major player in this country we should have many millions of dollars set aside,lawyers in employ and media space that's bought if necessary.

I know it's been spoken about many times before but a combined group of fishers,shooters and other down to earth aussies that just want to enjoy our country and a better society, need to unite properly instead being a bunch of various groups and girls (with apologies to our female real people).

I'd like us to BUY a lot of coastal properties around the country to help ensure access...mull that one over!..just one idea.

There are one or two SOBA members coming up for the meeting, and we'll certainly be doing everything we can to rally support from SEQ.

If you are getting organised up there, can I suggest you get in contact with the Charter and Pro operators as well? They have money for this sort of thing, and are likely to have some information, anecdotal or otherwise, on "decreasing catch rates".

If you would like to coordinate this with SOBA, can I suggest a quick chat with Chris Ryan (SOBA's illustrious Leader)? Sling him a pm at least. He has a lot of very good ideas, some good contacts, and if we coordinate, our voices will be louder!

I agree with Craig.
you and craig need to get togeather and do something in your own area .the reason we get shafted all the time is people sit back critizing others efforts and not do anything themself. we have rallied lots of different groups for the nths meeting to try to get the ball rolling. this is going to affect people all the way down to coffs and Mr garret is allready accessing this proposal.we really dont have time to wait.you need to talk to fishing groups etc and get things happing

what is the definition of the 'coral sea'. How far South does it go? Does it go to the coast, or is it East of the GBR?

Whatever the facts are, I agree this is a major issue and something we all need to get behind and fight against.

The Coral sea closures they are proposing is the area OUTSIDE the authroity of GBRMPA, so the entire coral sea, excluding what is currently under the Authority of the GBRMPA, this includes wide of Moreton Bay Area and down to Coffs
