ive had a pot out infront of wellington point for about 3 months now i usually walk out at low tide and bait it every now and then usually for a few sandies prob average around 4 each time so keeps the parents happy, since that bad weather is around i havent had much to do on the fishing side so i took out some mullet yesterday and baited the pot checked it this afternoon took me half an hour to find it due to the brown water anyway found it and to my surprise 20 crabs 18 legal males i was very suprised S/E must be pushing them in to bad the conditions are terrible otherwise ide do a decent crabbing trip ;D

oh i know that oldboots but where i go not 1 person will check it but 100's would, do you know the beach that you can walk along to king island? ever seen the people that do that walk lets just say why i dont use floats there and why i very rarely use a pot is because ive lost over 30 pots this year to theaves and i cant afford it, im sorry but im sure im not the only one here to break this rule, i have to!

Hey JustJack, Now you have mentioned this, there will be 100 boats with 400 crab pots out in front of Wello as soon as the weather is good, Sunday at this stage. It will be a great specular to sit and watch from the jetty, a bit of Ramp Rage, then who's pot's is who, the poor Sandie will be so confused with all the boat noise, pots every where , like a mine field, and then with all the smelly mullet around the Bull Sharks will have a picnic.
Great catch to you and the "Old Guy"
Cheers, Mark

Great show. Sounds like it might be well worth me getting the gear out and sorted ready for a trip.

Doesn't say how long the rope has to be though ;D
Actually, at the website, there's no mention in the new regs of floats on traps in the saltwater section, only in the freshwater section. Either I'm missing something, (probably me marbles), or they've cocked up big time.

If you leave crab pots lying arround the wello flats with no float and particularly no identification card they will be pretty much fair game.
most people would view them as being feral and escaped.
there would be two common resopnes
the honest one.. drag it ashore and dump it next to the bin at the boat ramp.....very common sight............was that corroded and weed encrusted pot with a stone fish traped in it one of yours?
the more common one..... no float... no name.... finders keepers.
Think about the damage it could do to someones prop.
are you sure they were stolen or just escaped.
now onto the number of crab pots arround wello........been out there lately.......there have been heaps of pots out the front of wello and arround the hybers for weeks.
It's like a slalom course till you get out past the 8m mark.
cheers

Gee the crab boys are out in form. You have to dodge the pots out of welly to green there everywere. But every time i drop one someone likes crab more than me i think. The pro's come through at sun up and disturb our quiet fishing on the drop offs and make a hell of a noise when checking there pots so i thank you for keeping it near shore.

i put it where no boats travel, im not an idiot, i put it away from other crabers, and its fair game to people even if you have all the bells and whistles on it, ive tried all that before it dont work so now i put it where no one can see it, what would you honestly rather,
1. a pot with float and identification and have it stolen in 24 hours
2. a pot full of crabs that no one has touched
plus its still illegal to through out even what looks like an abandoned pot, plus i do have identification on it just no float

I used to sink my pots JJ. Till i caught a lost pot one day and found about 8 Muddie shells at various stages of decay/ breakage. If left unattended due to not being located by the owner, crabs will continue to enter and feed on/ fight each other IMO and they become a continuous death trap.
Not to mention our boating issues- you state boats dont go there- you would be surprised where boats go on a calm night.
18 in the pot would have made a great photo hey. Have you got one, or try to next time.
