After two dud Clarrie Hall trips in the last few weeks, we were keen to have a crack at some wild bass. We had a family dinner at my parents on Saturday night, so leaving home at lunchtime we thought we'd work our way down stopping at causeways and bridges to have a flick at anything that looked promising. Well not a lot did, either that or it was fenced off so it was "access denied". We ended up stopping at Killen Falls out the back of Ballina. We had fished there about 18 months ago and scored some small bass under the falls and pools below. It's a bit of a hike to get down there but well worth it. With nothing happening in the large pool below the falls we made our way down stream and picked up a couple of tiddlers. Mine being the smallest nabbed on a cut down baby bass. I thought I'd snagged a leaf. Although small, they were all healthy/hungry little buggers which was good to see. The pools were a lot shallower that last time we were there so made fishing them a little harder.
Time was against us and Rod was leading 3 to a 1/2.(I can't seriously count the poor little thing as a full fish)::) So it was time to leave before Rod caught another one.
Now for the salt water chapter.....Another family gathering at my grandparents for lunch on Sunday. They have a property that backs on to the Evans River. It's a top spot and we camp down there when ever we get the chance. We spent Christmas down there and there was awesome snag that had fallen in from the national park on the other side. We flogged it to foam over Chrissy for zip. Nearly every boat that passes stops for a crack. As you do!!
After lunch we join our fishing crazy brother inlaws and my brother(Peter) down the back for a quick flick. They are on borrowed time as the new bubs are tired and need to go home to bed. Rod headed down stream with the poppers to have a crack at the whiting over the yabby flats. We hung out across the from the snag, an out going tide meant using the wind and good cast you could get right with in striking distance.
Bro inlaw 1 - Shep had a quick flick with my S1 and 750 Symetre loaded with 6lb super PE, 8lb leader and a 5" atomic fat grub(Clubbie aka: red and yellow). Nice cast into the strike zone and smashed!! No hook up and after a few more casts it's time for him to head off.
Mean while there has been 'someone' stirring up the bait and the odd smack up in the snag. We thought it was a bass or EP.
Bro inlaw 2 - Paul, his fishing motto is go prepared for anything!! He uses a short, stiff baitcaster with abu 6000, 20lb mono, a couple of no.4 ball sinkers and a 30lb wire trace all of the time and blows me away how many good size whiting and bream he catches on wire bloody trace. Paul had already snagged a nice grunter bream on a fresh yabby. He lobbed a nice cast right over to the snag and let it roll on by. Bang!!! He's on!!! First call was for a stingray, it gave a hell of a run and he had to thumb the drag. Once clear of the snag it still wasn't giving up. Maybe a big grunter? Finally in to the shallows and wholly hell....It's a jack!!:o A nice Jack!! Caught on a yabby and whiting hook FFS. I begged Paul and Peter to put him back......so I can have a crack at him when we're camping at Easter.::) 8-) A couple more drifts past and another grunter, he was out of yabbies and it was time to go. I wasn't there when he told Shep but I can imagine the reply, it would have been much the same as mine and Rod's.:'( >:( ::) ;D
It looks soooo Jacky down there but after being told by one of the locals that they are rarely seen in the Evans we had never held much hope of landing one. Me thinks now it was a bum steer!!::) ::)
Bloody bait!! We can't seem to catch anything larger than undersized bream and whiting down there on lures or SP's. Paul out fishes us all every time with bloody yabbies. I think the yabby pump will be packed for the Easter camping trip. Not to mention the wire trace.;) 8-) :P
Cheers Kim:)
