Hi all, I need to get some new combos for catching whiting and flathead. The rods and reels we have at the moment have just about had enough.
I will be needing 4 one for each of my family members but will get 1 or 2 at a time.
I would prefer shimano rods and reels because I have never had a problem with shimano. My budget would be about $120 - $200 per combo. I also would like a decent reel in that price not a real cheapy.
Have any of you got any ideas on what I could look for?
Thanks Brock

Brock, it's time to look outside the box. There are numerous brands on the market today that will fit your purpose...and budget. Give them a chance.

Wags is spot on. I use 7 brands of reel regularly and they all have good and bad points so don't get stuck on one brand
What sort of fishing are you going to do ie boat or landbased and will you be using bait or lures

A little Alvey on a light Wilson heritage 7-8 foot rod is pretty cool and good on the budget

I will be fishing from a boat and mostly using bait but maybe some soft plastics every now and then.
I want it to be Shimano please

Alright... Kmart currently have Symetre (I think thats the correct spelling) reels on sale for just under $100, match to a Starlo stix squidgy spin or raider.. bingo.

A Shimano Stradic Combo is on sale at $225 or so at one of the major chains. It would do fine

There are some nice little shimano rods down at that place we dont mention.. capalaba branch.....on clearance for $20 down from $50 ish......Ive set up some mates with them and they are very nice .... don't know how many left.
Same place has some lovely little phfluger reels in a choice of 3 sizes for $50.
spool em up with some 10lb platapus platinum, you'll get 2 reels to the roll
so you have a very nice little rig for arround $80 per rig ready to go.
If you want to buy only shimano....at the moment you will be paying too much and for just a name.. both BigW and Kmart are restocking with shimano so none of that will be on clearance.
Havn't seen a shimano reel bargin for months.
These little pfluger reels are just gorgeous.....I set a mate and his wife up with a pair last week......almost walked out with one my self.... hmm still might.
Great looking, smooth as and some beef in the drag.
Personaly....I fish a 4 1/2 inch alvey on an 8' hollow glass jarvis for whiting and other little stuff........ you need a soft tip.
Jarvis make the same rod as I use under 3 different colours and badges for different chain stores..... you can pick em up for about $30... they are suposed to be a spin rod.
There are still some serious bargins and clearances arround..... but you have to look for them.
All the BigW fishing departments are in clearance mode.....all their abu garcia stuff is reduced....some of it seriously.....there are some small spin reels among it.
Anything that is old stock is on clearance.
cheers
