Greetings all!

Deepfried and I practiced gaffing sharks off the end of the Ballina north wall on the weekend.

Not as easy as it looked and we had to get the gaff in round the head.

Any general comments on gaffing from the rocks or walls for fish like sharks, jewies or tuna?

The only suggestion that I have (having had a mate try to gaff two schoolies in the dark from a rock ledge) is to tape a glowstick to the back of the gaff head so you can tell which side has the pointy end on. My mate had 5 or 6 strikes at each fish before a glimps of moonlight showed him which side the hook was on and he got it right.

Regards Rob.

I painted a white strip on the hook side of the handle end of my rock gaff - never been used tho -(

Easier than the glow stick, although this will tell you where the gaff head is in the dark.

Just get a strip of gaff tape on the sde the hook faces. You only need 2-3cm of it. Either that or get a metal file and scratch at the hook side so you can feel the rough patch.

piece of plastic tube or rod under some shrink wrap just like you see on Kayak paddles so you can just feel it in the dark.

I have some glow in the dark powder that you mix in with clear paint or resin. Glows really well, just light my analogue watch only brighter.
Expensive as hell though.
Some of the custom car painters might have some down that way.
How about a little LED sticking out the side near the pointy bit??
Is the gaff hollow or solid??
If it's hollow a wire could be run up to the end with a little battery pack in the hollow bit.
