Hi guys, I am wondering whether I should get the Symetre or not.

I've starting using lures exclusively without much success. I am currently using an old Daiwa Royale 4500, could that be holding me back? I use a graphite light snapper spin rod.

After reading the popular reel thread I am wondering whether I should get the Symetre or not. Is there a Daiwa equivalent that is cheaper for about the same thing?

Also, what is the Symetre FH I see on ebay? I know FJ is front drag and FI is rear drag but I am unsure what FH is.

Also, do all Symetres come with a spare spool?

The fish don't care what reel you have... providing you have a balanced outfit and feel comfortable and confident using your gear then who cares if it's a cheap combo or a fireblood outfit?

I can comment on the new Symetres(FJ), I have a 2500 and use it for soft plastics and hard bodies. IMO they're a great reel for the price. I've caught Tuna to 6kg with this reel and it has shown no signs of weakness. It is spooled with 8lb Stren Microfuse and matched to a 2-4kg Starlo Stix. No they don't come with a spare spool. But i agree with Chamelion, There's no point getting a reel that doesn't feel comfortable to you. Hope this helps.

Yeah I have seen the Symetre with spare spools, they got them in the bubble packaging at the mart of K for 120 ish, I have the symetre in the 4000 and its is an awesome reel, am saving for the 2500, can't go wrong. Any idea what your targeting walugi? is the 4500 Diawa too big?? The guys I know suggest you spend the similar amounts on the reel as you would on your rod, as a guide anyway.

I had a 2500 symetre, and it came with a spare spool.
It was a great reel, and I used it for plastics and lures with a 2-4kg raider and it served me well. Had some long fights with it (mostly stingrays!).

The reason I don't have it now, is because it went for a swim and is probably now a feature in some crab's backyard - courtesy of my girlfriend not securing it in the rod holder on the boat. Lucky I'm so forgiving!

I now use the spare spool it came with on my cheaper reel - a 2500 sienna.

mate love the symetres. i have a 2500 and 4000 picked the 2500 up for $115 and the 4000 for $99 (stumbled across a very good sale price)!! and both came with spare spools. im not sure if the new model does but i dont see why theyd not have 1. if you dont have the confidence in your gear it wont transfer to confidence when the fish is hooked mate, so if your not confident in the reel you currently use then YES upgrade. and remember to get the best you can aford.Better to buy a good reel once then a cheaper reel 4 times!!!
cheers JAYVEE

where are you guys finding such cheap prices?!?!

So does no one know what the FH versions are? I think it may mean fresh water..

Thanks for the advice. Yes, the 4500 is too big, I have to push it into the holder a little bit. I'm hoping a new reel will give me a better cast and better control of the plastics in the water, and if i ever hook a fish with them :P

I recently bought a Symetre 2500 fj and for the price it's a good reel. Doesn't come with a spare spool either. One thing worth noting is that the retrieve rate on the Symetre is alot higher the the same size Diawa which is handy if you want to flick a small slug from time to time.

I am Symetre through and through, but a good mate of mine is a huge fan of the Daiwa excellers, similar price and specs.

Syemetres,

The FI comes with a spare spool... I have one, cant complain for the price.

The new FJ does NOT come with a spare spool... not as smooth... I bought one of them too (mistake).

To give you the best advice, the key, the real way to catch fish is to be confident in your gear, where your fishing ect ect. If you doubt anything... it WILL affect your fishing.

If you are going to get a Symetre, get the older FI, dont get the FJ. If you find a tackle store with the old stock FI you should get one for around $110 or so... maybe alittle bit less of ebay.

DONT GET THE FJ!

Hope this helps,
Bandit.

P.S. If you need anything else free free to PM me.

Are the Symetre's still running a single disc drag system or have they upgraded to multiple disc? I have a 2000 Symetre that would be now 12 yrs old and still going strong with a decent drag for lighter lines, I would be happier though if it had multiple disc drag though.

Out of interest, anyone use(ed) a symetre and a stradick? How much difference is there?

Hi, thanks for the info. Isn't he FI a rear drag reel? And isn't rear drag worse then front drag?

Firstly,

I own both Stradics and Symetres... Stradics are the better reel, but they do cost more... But the newer stradic is alot better than the FH model... Stradics got SO MUCH better when they went to the FI's. :o

FI Symetre, No, It is a front drag. Rear drag is not worse, just different. ::)

I you can affored the Stradic FI, it is a better reel... But the symetre is still great. I like to think I know my reels, and I do... I own most of them and have used/own every Daiwa and Shimano spin reel out today, need to know anything about one of them let me know... I will most likely beable to tell you. ::)

Anymore questions feel free to ask or PM me. :)

Hi Walugi ..... Out of curiosity - what are you targeting with your plastics ? ..... A 4500 is a pretty big reel

Oh, it's a size 4000 reel. I'm targeting bream and bigger. Not picky for now, still trying to catch my first fish on SPs actually.

Walugi I got the 1500 about 2 years ago has not missed a beat use it for gar, whitting, bream and also offshore to 30m of water for snapper and reefies. 2 spools one with 6lb and other 14lb braid. If I had to buy another would upgrade one size up. Still holds 125yards of briad with about 50 of 12lb backing. Biggest fish to date 5.5kg snapper and 70cm Yellow Tail Kingfish on 6lb on a ian millar flick stick. This is the first reel I have ever spent good money on and more than happy with it.

You probably dont need anything bigger than a 2500 ( bream , flatties & even the odd jew)
aside from making life easier / comfortable ....... by enabling you to control the rod action better single handed - - The smaller spool diameter will enable you to fish slower ....... one of the keys of fishing plastics .8-)

Damn, why didn't anyone tell me this earlier :(

Crap, are there any advantages besides being able to load more line?

Would it be okay to use the Symetre for bait fishing? I'd like to load one spool with 10lb braid, and the other with 15lb mono

Baitfishing / rockfishing all fine with a longer 2 handed spin rod ...........

I wasn't sure what you had in mind & so I asked

I bought a Symetre 4000. Brilliant little reel with a heap of top shelf features. Cost me $138.00 and has a great drag which beats every Daiwa up to the Sol which has an equivalent drag power. Check the Daiwa drag capacities out on the Daiwa american site. The reason given for not including the extra spool was to ensure the price stayed at the same price as the previous model which didn't have all the new features. I intend to see if it will handle the odd Barra when teamed up with a Procaster rod - another piece of great value fishing equipment. I did buy my Symetre in December though - before most of the prices went up, up, up!

Cheers.;D
