Hi guys,

Im from SA and looking for a fairly rugged snapper reel for SA reds. doesnt have to have bells and whistles. i have liked penn spinfishers in the past as surf reels (8500, 9500)and would turn to that first (6500 range for this) but i am finding them a bit heavy atm and tucking one under the arm all day might get a bit much. Also, im heading up to weipa in april and would like a threadline that i can match to a 7ft rod to cast metals and poppers for queens, gts pelagics etc. For this application i would think the retrieve on the spinfisher is too slow.

any suggestions for a reel that might tick both these boxes? i spose budget wise could squeeze out 200 and no brand preference

cheers
Greg

Daiwa Capricorn 4500J, it has a great drag, and holds plenty of line and is not to big. Mo tackle have them for $295 i think.

Shimano baitrunner is ideal if you are bait fishing but if you want a lighter reel that can double for both bait fishing and high retrieve spinning then you can't go past the Shimano Stradic. A 4000 FI will set you back about 300 clams but it will not let you down. I have a 4000 and 6000 and love them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys appreciate it. The old man has a shimano 4500 baitrunner, is a pretty nice sturdy reel to be sure. an option on the table definatley.

Does anyone know anything about the Daiwa Exceler Oceano 4500J ? comes in about the same price as the baitrunner?
cheers

Would the Baitrunner handle the blistering runs that Gt's are well known for? Having never owned one i have no idea just curious :) .

go a phluger echelon. they are really tough and nice and light too. i have a br 6500 and the echelon and they are both are both kickass reels but if you wanna lighter reel, the phluger is the go. the br 6500 is quite heavy. but is one of my favourite snapper reels, along with the br 3500. the 3500 is lighter. hope this helps.

HT 100 drag washers will do the trick.

Or maybe a Daiwa Oceano 4500J which is basicaly a downgraded Capricorn (less bearings) at around $220ISH.A nice tough no frills bit of kit.Use mine on most of my Tassie offshore species eg gummys, flaties, kingfish etc
Loaded with 30lb braid. Its my fav reel at the moment.

If I was you... get one of the Stradic's by Shimano...

Fast, strong... and looks good!

I have the 3000 and 4000.... Great reel.

IF you are looking at Daiwa's.... rememeber one thing... If you get a 2000 size daiwa, it is more the size of a 3000 Shimano.

Hope this helps,
Bandit.
