Hello I am new to the impoundment seen and thought I would post a report on my first few attempts.

First was Faust dam about 7th and 8th january day one we moved up the river arm casting at weeded banks and points with a mix of weed and timber result was two short bites one on a berkly frog the other on a walking style suface lure. A troll of the basin on dusk showed small pods of about 4 fish on the sounder but not interested in scorpions on offer.

Day two same as day 1 but some rain overnight soon after launching 11:30 son was working the walk dog lure along a weed bank attracted a huge short strike that mde him get down off the casting platform for fear of being pulled out. about ten casts later same result a massive boil short of the lure and that was it . Late in the day 5:30 casting down wind to the edge of a weed bed on a shallow point the young fella again attracted the attention of another large fish on the same lure but no hook contact.

While we didn't catch a fish at faust we saw enough to convince us a return trip was on the cards.

13th january bleek day boared check the level of tinaroo and saw it had had a significant rise asked son if a trip to tinaroo was a good idea and that was it he was out preparing the boat. arrived 10:30 and looked for a quiet bay out of the breeze, the water was well up and drowned grass beds extended out from the bank about ten metres it looked very fishy. while moving down the bank I saw a large swirl tight on the bank so we tied off to a tree and began casting a mixture of hollow bellys, boof frogs, poppers and minnows at the edge of the grass to try and draw the fish out.

I saw another couple of fish move in a pocket amongst the grass so laid a cast with the boof frog right on top of them all this did was scare approx 6 fish further along the bank.

Another half hour casting produced a couple of strikes on surface lures from fish in the 70-80 cm range and a failed hook up on a hollowbelly. we moved on to other similar locations for nil result.

At 5:00 pm we went back to the first location to find the same activity in the grass so went to work again and like before missed a couple on the surface. Then it finally happened our first fish my son had fishing a hollowbelly with a steady retrieve and an occasional twitch and wind he came up tight on a very angry 70cm fish it took him on a dance aroud the boat and tree we were tied to and then in the net. a couple of quick pics and off it went and so did we happy in the fact we finally had our first fish.

25th January tinaroo social day out 4 people in the boat lots of traffic not expecting to much tried various spots for no result then decided to give the location from the previous visit a go. On arrival no sign of fish and the water had risen about 1mtr from last trip hammered the water with various arsenel 20 mins in I was watching my father inlaws storm shad return to the boat thinking how life like it looked when I noticed the tip of his rod load up and a fish around 1mtr roll on his lure and return to the grass.

A further 20mins produced nothing so it was back home.

Hope no one fell asleep but I thought I would cover all three trips in one post basically because I'm too lazy to post three times.

Andrew.

Yeh, good report Andrew.

No need to worry about putting us to sleep with that sort of content. Many poor souls on this chatboard are suffering from an as yet uncureable disease and will lap that stuff up like their lives depend on it!

Cheers.

Andrew thanks for posting your report. It is great to see other anglers getting amongst them up here. Next time you are heading this way give us a holler as we are often on Tinaroo at some stage over each weekend (plus a few mid week trips :))

Was good to see Ryan with a fish in an area where they can be hard to pull out of with due to lots of submerged trees, stumps and fallen timber

Cheers
Matt

Thanks for the replies fellas it appears all of you share the same enthusiasm for this type of fishing as me. Yes my son ryan loves his fishing and has become a very competent fisherman, I would rather have a day where he gets more bites because I enjoy watching the enjoyment he gets from it.

Matt do you fish tinaroo through winter if so is the fishing a lot harder or do you just change your tactics for the cooler weather.

Just to get every angry I thought I would include a pic of one of my pets from my private impoundment. This fish is max 5 years old fed only on the dams natural food source which consists of bony bream mouth almightys rainbow fish and red claw.

haha I don't know about angry Andrew, although I'm certainly jealous! :brood:

A. I wish I had a dam
B. I wish it had barra in it

Congrats to your young fella for getting his first impoundment Barra, I feel sorry for you as you will both probably contract Impoundment Barra Disease (IBD) now - as vinny said, it's basically uncurable :'(

Cheers
Tony

Andrew,

I absolutely love Tinaroo through winter!!!!!! The fishing can be somewhat short of sensational (for Tinaroo standards). Like all fisheries though, it has its days, but they are the days where I think harder and maybe even learn more. My fishing tactics do change quite alot through winter. I am studying geography more than fishing thoughout this period, and watching weather patterns etc etc. I generally also fish lures a lot slower than what I am currently. Bites are more (IMO) out of needing to feed on an easy meal to conserve energy more than the reaction bites of which I tend to aim for during these warmer months. So by slowing down I give the barra more chance to stop feeling so "dam" lazy and snavel my lure into their bucketmouth. Then you have the odd day here and there where fast and crazy are the go. Like all forms of barra fishing you do need to adjust to the day and the current weather cycles, as no days do a barra as a whole "shut down". Imagine that "oh todays Tuesday, we are not going to eat and have a barra strike":) :) Like I said these are just my opinions at the moment.

Anyday to me is beter to be on the water than sitting at home thinking about fishing or watching the idiot box, so I will more often than not go in any conditions, which also assists in learning more.

Barramundi fishing is, and I hope will be, a never ending learning session. The challenge is a lot of the fun. Something that I have learnt quite recently is that fishing must be fun and regardless if done either by yourself or with mates, must be enjoyed for the sport it is. Once you take this enjoyment away, you loose sight of the bigger picture and in a nutshell, will catch less fish (IMHO and proven)........

It is great that you take Ryan with you, and hope he continues this passion throughout his life. It would I believe be very hard to keep a young fella into barra fishing, as it has its tough days, but those days are when the humble bread and butter species come into play.

Enough rambling for now

Cheers
Matt

Top notch report Andrew.....get out there and keep those reports coming mate...We love it. You have a great attitude and there is no doubt it rubs off on Ryan.

Looking forward to reports of your future adventures. You couldn't do any better than hooking up with Matty or Wheezer (Andrew) or Tinaroo Triumph (Theo) up there at the big T.

Cheers
Paul
